Warning: There are spoilers ahead for From season 4, episode 10, “If a Tree Falls in the Forest…”In the penultimate season, From answers 10 major mysteries. Since the first episode, there have been questions about the mysterious Township, its many supernatural forces, why the characters are trapped in this location, and whether it is possible to ever escape and return home.
The From season 3 finale answers some of the biggest mysteries, including the meaning of the bottle tree numbers, what was growing inside of Fatima Hassan (Pegah Ghafoori), the origins of the monsters, how Tabitha Matthews (Catalina Sandino Moreno) and Jade Herrera (David Alpay) are connected to Miranda (Sarah Booth) and Christopher (Thom Payne), and what the word “Anghkooey” means.
Beyond just addressing recent questions, From season 4 provides answers to many of the show’s biggest ongoing mysteries, going all the way back to season 1. This sets up the endgame that is coming in season 5, which has been renewed and is confirmed to be the end of the hit MGM+ horror series.

What Is The Meaning Of Jade’s Visions?
Since season 1, Jade has been having visions featuring a symbol and a variety of figures, including Christopher, a Civil War soldier (Dylan Bailey), a man crushed by a boulder (André Pettigrew), and a man holding a skull filled with blood (Sean Skerry). Previous seasons revealed that the symbol represents the roots of the bottle tree and that Christopher is a previous reincarnation of Jade.
Now, From season 4 explains Jade’s other visions. The individuals in his visions are other versions of the past lives he has lived in the Town, all of whom were killed by fellow residents instead of by the nocturnal monsters. This revelation leads to another, which is the importance of going into the caves and retrieving the dead children’s bones.

Why Were The Residents Brought To The Town?
During the aftermath of Jade’s revelation about the bones, all the residents are brought together, where they learn about the truth about Jade and Tabitha’s past lives and the plan to go into the caves. Jade and Tabitha have been coming to the Township for many years in different reincarnations in their attempts to save the children. During the communal gathering, he suggests that the other residents were drawn there because they heard the cries of the children.
In a Reddit AMA ahead of the season 4 finale, From‘s showrunners confirmed Jade’s theory that “the other residents are just ‘minnows’ who unfortunately ‘heard the cries of the children.'” They added that “Other than Jade and Tabitha, there is a connective theme among all the other characters who were ‘pulled’ into FROMtown. They were each at some sort of crossroads in their lives. Boyd, for instance, had just retired.”

What Are The Totems At The Settlement?
The location known as the settlement was introduced in From season 3, and it contains totems that have unsettling-looking faces perched atop them. What the totems are and why they are at the settlement becomes clear in season 4, episode 5, when the life-size doll monsters emerge from the lake.
Tabitha is able to kill one of the monsters by stabbing it with the totem, and the other terrifying creatures turn away due to the presence of the objects. This reveals that the totems are protection against the dolls, and they are at the settlement because it is right next to the lake where these monsters emerge from. Since the talismans are ineffective against these creatures, the totems are the best means of defense.

What Is The Source Of The Voices Sara Hears?
In season 1, Sara Myers (Avery Konrad) hears voices that promise to get everyone home if she hurts and kills certain individuals. The voices went away in season 2, but they came back to taunt her about Fatima being kidnapped in season 3. It’s been clear for a long time that the voices are something different than From‘s nocturnal monsters, but what they were remained mysterious.
From Finally Reveals The Disturbing Answer To A 4-Year-Old Sara Mystery
A mystery that began in From season 1 has finally been answered, with the disturbing answer revealed in season 4, episode 4 of the horror series.
Season 4 finally provides an answer, which is that the villainous Man in Yellow (Douglas E. Hughes) has been the source of the voices all along. He was manipulating Sara in season 1, and he revives the voices in season 4 to manipulate her again. The process of how he does this is shown while disguised as Sophia (Julia Doyle), who is living in Sara’s house.

Is There A Secret Mole Among The Residents?
One of the longest-running From theories is there being a secret role among the residents. Tillie (Deborah Grover) was one of the main suspects, but this theory died alongside her in season 3. Season 4, episode 1 reveals that Sophia is actually the Man in Yellow, which still hasn’t been discovered by the characters, but it’s not a secret to the audience.
In season 4’s later episodes, it is revealed that Clara (Katerina Bakolias) made a deal long ago with the Man in Yellow that she would get to go home if she does his bidding. She hasn’t been spying on or sabotaging her neighbors all along, but when Sophia shows who she actually is and reminds Clara of their deal, the once minor character becomes a full-on mole, and even helps remove all the talismans from around Town.

How Can The Dead Children Be Saved?
Tabitha and Jade know that they need to save the children, as it is the reason they have returned to the Town over and over again in various reincarnations. How to save children who are already long dead is another matter, though, and it is something Tabitha and Jade have always failed at despite their numerous attempts.
One of the dead children is a daughter Jade and Tabitha had.
Jade’s vision, fueled by hallucinogenic mushrooms, helps him see that the key is to find the children’s bones in the caves and remove them. The Man in Yellow and the Boy in White (Vox Smith) both make remarks that confirm how important the bones are, and while they have been removed from the cave, the residents still need to figure out how to use them to save the children.

What Is The Meaning Of The Talisman Symbol?
Originally, the plan was for more than two people to go down into the caves to get the bones. However, after seeing the dead children pointing at her and taking a closer look at the symbol on the talismans, Tabitha realizes that the image is a depiction of her and Jade, and that they have to be the only ones to go into the caves.
How the talismans were created and who gave them power is still unknown, but it’s now clear that they connect to Jade and Tabitha’s ongoing journey to save the children. It’s also an example of a particularly important takeaway from season 4, which is that how a ritual is performed is crucial.

How Is Fatima Both Alive & Medically Dead?
After giving birth to Smiley (Jamie McGuire) in the season 3 finale, she feels a connection to the resurrected creature throughout season 4. She uses this connection to briefly control him in episode 7, but in the aftermath of this, dark lines become to appear all over her body, and the medical test run on her say that she should be dead.
This ends up being the case because Fatima was gradually transforming into one of the nocturnal monsters after giving birth to Smiley. In the season 4 finale, she realizes what is happening and fully transforms into one of them, and choosing to stay behind allows Tabitha, Jade, Boyd Stevens (Harold Perrineau), and Ellis Stevens (Corteon Moore) the opportunity to escape the caves with the bones.

Why Didn’t The Boy In White Want The Bottle Tree Removed?
When Victor Kavanaugh (Scott McCord) tries to chop down the bottle tree in season 3, the Boy in White is adamant about him not doing so. The mysterious character returns in season 4 to warn against doing this, this time delivering the message to Tabitha and Henry Kavanaugh (Robert Joy). Keeping the tree standing is one of the few things the Boy in White has not been ambiguous about, and the season 4 finale finally answers why this is the case.
After pulling up the bottle tree, day instantly turns into night, there is an earthquake, Tabitha and Jade are trapped in the caves, and red lightning begins shooting up into the sky. The Boy in White seemingly knew all of this was going to happen, which is why he warned From‘s characters, and there are likely even worse consequences to come given how gleeful Sophia is about the tree being gone.
1
What Are The Boy In White’s Motivations?
The Boy in White’s motivations have been one of the show’s greatest mysteries. From helping Victor survive for years on his own to the warnings about the bottle tree, he has seemed helpful at times, but in other instances, he seems more nefarious and as though he is manipulating the residents.
The final scene of the From season 4 finale reveals that his motivations have actually been about helping the residents all along. It’s established that he and the Man in Yellow are on opposite sides, and he is optimistic about the cycle ending now that the residents have the bones in their possession. There’s more to explore about his origins and why he has to always be so cryptic, but he is an ally after all.
