None of the members of House Targaryen live up to their motto, “Fire and Blood,” like Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith). The younger brother of King Viserys I (Paddy Considine), Daemon is known as the Rogue Prince due to his chaotic nature, which leads him to live a life of adventure, conquest, and murder. Following Viserys’ death, he stands alongside his niece-wife, Princess Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy), to help her fight for her rights to the Iron Throne.

Daemon’s time at the cursed castle of Harrenhal is far from ideal. Not only is he plagued by aggressive visions every night, he finds himself stonewalled in attempts to win the Riverlords over to his cause. One night, he is interrupted in his sleep by the castellan, Ser Simon Strong (Sir Simon Russell Beale), so Daemon throws out this quip before Simon informs him that angry Riverlords are outside.

Admittedly, this line is here because it’s hilarious, and Matt Smith gives the perfect delivery, but it can be dissected a little. The sarcastic use of pudding shows how little Daemon thinks of Simon, as so far, the only thing he has been able to help Daemon with is choosing what meal to have. This makes for a perfect juxtaposition with Daemon’s ill-conceived plan of spreading fear in the Riverlands coming back to bite him.

While Viserys was mourning the loss of his wife and son, Daemon spent his time in a tavern alongside his Gold Cloaks, and, supposedly, made a joke about Viserys having “an heir for a day.” Enraged, the king summoned Daemon to the throne room for answers, and Daemon shot back that he was frustrated that Viserys never made him his Hand of the King. When Viserys asks why he would have ever done that, Daemon answers by saying he is Viserys’ brother, then follows up with the quote.

This quote mirrors one said by Rhaenyra during the opening prologue, “The only thing that could destroy the house of the dragon was itself.” In this case, Daemon is saying that Targaryens should be loyal to one another above all else, reinforcing his respect and love for his brother. It’s unfortunate that Daemon’s impulsive nature leads to him making more enemies than friends, because he and Viserys would have been a phenomenal team if they weren’t always clashing.

After Prince Aemond Targaryen (Ewan Mitchell) claims Vhagar, the largest living Targaryen dragon, the balance of power swings heavily to the Greens. Rhaenyra confides in Daemon that she needs him by her side, but the only way they can marry is if her current husband, Ser Laenor Velaryon (John Macmillan), is removed from the picture. Rhaenyra comments that she does not wish to be a tyrant and rule through fear, but Daemon uses this quote to explain its necessity.

Rhaenyra wants to be a queen worthy of her father’s trust, but due to the gender norms of Westeros, it’s an uphill battle. Daemon thus reminds Rhaenyra that too much kindness could be seen as weakness, and that the crown needs to be prepared to intimidate and subjugate threats to it. Since the Targaryens have dragons at their disposal, that message is pretty easy to spread.

When Daemon and Rhaenyra are spotted in a pleasure house, Viserys has his brother brought before him. Hungover from a night of drinking, Daemon does not deny what happened, and his attempts to justify his actions make Viserys even angrier. When Viserys explains that no lord will want to marry Rhaenyra, Daemon throws this quote back at him, though it does little to calm his brother’s anger.

Daemon has always been one who believes that House Targaryen is better than the average men of Westeros thanks to their Valyrian heritage and dragons. Viserys eventually gets brought up, and Daemon spits venom as he accuses Viserys of fearing him and only picking Rhaenyra as his heir to keep Daemon from the throne. For his bravery, Daemon’s men name him King of the Narrow Sea. However, Daemon decides to return to Westeros, giving up his crown and Craghas’ warhammer as a gesture of goodwill to Viserys.
