It isn’t uncommon for box-office bombs to find an audience on home video. The Shawshank Redemption famously redeemed itself on VHS following a poor box-office run more than 30 years ago, and is now regarded as one of the best movies of all time. More recently, movies such as Mortal Kombat and The Last Duel have performed phenomenally on streaming after lukewarm theatrical runs. When the mega-budget summer tentpole Masters of the Universe debuted in theaters a few weeks ago, many predicted that it would work better at home. However, the movie managed to spend exactly one week at the top of the global Prime Video viewership chart before being replaced by a far smaller title.
Directed by Travis Knight, Masters of the Universe was headlined by Nicholas Galitzine, with Camila Mendes, Idris Elba, Alison Brie, and Jared Leto in supporting roles. The movie’s promotional material drew concern from long-time fans of the franchise, and their worst fears came true when it tanked commercially. Produced on a reported budget of $170 million, Masters of the Universe concluded its theatrical run with around $115 million worldwide. It received mixed reviews and is now sitting at a 67% critics’ score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the consensus reads, “By the power of Grayskull and with a little help from its self-deprecating script and spirited cast, Masters of the Universe is a delightful adventure that finds the humanity in He-Man.”

A Poorly Reviewed Horror Movie Is Dominating Prime Video
Masters of the Universe debuted on Prime Video less than a month after its theatrical release, and immediately jumped to the top of the streamer’s viewership rankings. However, according to FlixPatrol, it has been overtaken by the new survival horror movie The Devil’s Mouth, which was released on July 29. Directed by Jeff Wadlow and starring Kathryn Newtonand Lana Condor, the film has received poor reviews across the board. It holds a 31% critics’ score and a 16% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, which indicates that its success might be short-lived.
