Despite having everything going for it, from a Hollywood star leading the line to the backdrop of a beloved franchise, Ballerina failed miserably at the box office, becoming one of the biggest financial disappointments of 2025. Grossing less than $140 million worldwide against a $90 million budget, you’d be forgiven for thinking this was due to a lack of finesse. However, Ballerina is actually a superb action thriller that rivals the best of the mainline franchise, even earning “certified fresh” status on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. For a de Armas movie that lacks originality and finesse, look no further than the 2023 rom-com Ghosted.
Pairing up the Academy Award-nominee with Marvel alum Chris Evans, Ghosted told the tale of a salt-of-the-earth guy who becomes infatuated with a woman he will soon learn is a secret agent. It’s a simple premise, and one that neatly fills the time on a lazy afternoon, but it was unlikely to earn much acclaim. Nevertheless, the film fulfilled its purpose of becoming a streaming hit and continues to do so three years later. At the time of writing, Ghosted is one of the ten most-streamed movies on Apple TV in the world.
