30 Must-Watch Anime Series For Adult Fans

[

Anime, much like all animated media, is far more layered in audience and generational appeal than being disposable fare for younger viewers. Its imaginative renditions of practically every genre under the sun reaches a broad spectrum of demographics, much like how Scott McCloud argued the artistic and historical importance of comics. This is all to say, adults can find just as much enjoyment in anime as younger audiences, and they don’t even necessarily need to watch the same shows, either.

The best anime for adults often dive into far deeper themes than the usual battle shonen flavor of the season. This means gory, philosophical seinen classics have just as much of a place for older viewers as contemplative, gorgeous josei sleeper hits. But even anime intended initially for younger audiences can strike a chord with adults, a testament to the strength of their writing, and a strong reminder that the medium is far more than a niche consumed by today’s youth. Below are many of the best anime perfect for adult audiences craving something challenging, healing, or even simply fun on a relatable leve.

Welcome to the N.H.K. follows a young man named Sato who is a complete shut-in. Paranoid, delusional, and suffering from a severe case of anxiety, Sato lives alone in an apartment that his parents pay for. However, Sato’s life changes when he meets a young woman named Misaki who agrees to try and help Sato overcome his various psychological ailments.

Two prominent terms used throughout the anime are hikikomori and NEET. In Japan, a hikikomori is someone suffering from severe social isolation and withdrawal, while a NEET is anyone not in education, employment, or training.

Though the anime hasn’t aged well in some respects, what Welcome to the N.H.K. gets right is how it feels to suffer from mental illness. Sato’s social isolation will hit close to home for anyone who has dealt with bouts of serious depression, and that alone warrants it a solid recommendation for any adult anime fan.

For Western audiences, Psycho-Pass may pique fans of Philip K. Dick’s storytelling, namely of a dystopian society reminiscent of somewhere between Blade Runner and Minority Report, Psycho-Pass is a slam dunk. The series is excellently animated, spawning gorgeous cosplays and a dedicated fandom over the decade since its inception. The series addresses similar ethical dilemmas of apprehending people for crimes they’ve yet to commit and how a society focused so strongly on crime prevention can warp the mentality of its denizens.

Unsurprisingly, Psycho-Pass is banned in certain territories for its commentary, as it’s bound to strike a nerve in the security vs. freedom/privacy debate.

Psycho-Pass uses the Sibyl System to address these questions and how it predicts crime. This results in the ability to conduct cymatic scans, eerily predicting criminal intent or tendencies on the spot for its human subjects. Unsurprisingly, Psycho-Pass is banned in certain territories for its commentary, as it’s bound to strike a nerve in the security vs. freedom/privacy debate.

Barakamon is perfect for any adults who might feel burnt out from life and work, as the joy and healing that Seishu eventually finds in his new life is cathartic and rewarding to watch.

One of the truly most compelling pieces of cyberpunk fiction from the anime world, Texhnolyze is yet another masterpiece written by Chiaki J. Konaka. With the writer proving proficient both with bleak science fiction for mature audiences and even creating truly excellent franchise storytelling with Digimon Tamers, Texhnolyze is near the top of Konaka’s bleakest, most challenging anime for adults.

Texhnolyze is set in Lux and centers on taciturn prize pit fighter Ichise, who at different points lost his father and then his mother, with little left to remember them by. Having lost an arm and a leg in his line of work, Ichise soon finds himself embroiled in a multi-faction conflict as bleak visions of Lux, and indeed its people, are in a state of decay more dire that anybody expects.

Others find that they are unsatisfied in their jobs despite it being what they thought they wanted to do. It’s hard not to relate to Shirobako’s girls, and so their success and refusal to give up on their childhood dreams is easy to root for, making this anime a satisfying must-watch for adult anime fans.

The newest anime that should be on every adult viewer’s radar, Witch Hat Atelier is the fantastic new anime by Bug Films in which Coco, daughter of a dressmaker, suddenly discovers the magic she coveted all her young life was always within reach. However, this discovery came at a great cost, when Coco’s foolish eagerness resulted in a horrific spell encasing her mother in crystal.

With said magic being linked to a particularly crucial secret to the world of the Brimmed Hat witches, Coco’s newest client, Pointed Hat witch Qifrey, has no choice but to take Coco on as a student, as the young girl is determined to undo the mistake which imprisoned her mother. Witch Hat Atelier is beautifully animated, thoughtfully written, and utterly Ghibli-esque in its cinematic execution, creating a dazzling world which, while certainly approachable to younger audiences, exudes deeper themes that are perfect for mature audiences to dissect.

It’s an anime with a near-flawless balance of realism and goofiness, and any adult anime fan looking for something like that is sure to find a lot to love about it.
