6 Biggest Revelations from the End of Marvel’s Ultimate Universe

[

The Ultimate Marvel saga, a massive creative experiment by Marvel Comics, is officially in the books. Here are the big takeaways from the climax of the Ultimate storyline, three years in the making.

The miniseries Ultimate Endgame delivered the long-awaited confrontation between the Ultimates, this timeline’s version of the Avengers, and the supervillain rulers of the world, led by the Maker. As expected, the ending left a new status quo in place for the Ultimate Universe.

It’s the biggest Marvel story of 2026 ahead of Avengers: Doomsday’s release in December. Marvel has been steadily building to this moment since 2023; here are the big pulls coming out of the Finale of the Ultimate Universe.

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Ultimate Endgame and Ultimate Universe: Finale!

The Ultimate Saga Was All Prologue

The first iteration of Ultimate Marvel, which ran from 2000-2015, was an ongoing story, an open-ended universe that ran in parallel with the original. When Marvel launched the Ultimate Universe 2.0 in 2023, it was conceived of as something different. A self-contained saga with a beginning, middle, and end. Now fans know why: it was an extended prologue to the dawn of the real Ultimate Universe.

Marvel full on destroyed Ultimate Universe 1.0 when it decided to discontinue the line. One of the few survivors was the Maker, the Ultimate Reed Richards, who broke bad and turned downright depraved. The Maker remade the Ultimate Universe 2.0 in his own twisted image, preventing the empowerment of heroes like Spider-Man, and perverting others, like Hulk, into villains. With the Maker’s defeat in Ultimate Endgame, what once went wrong (to quote Quantum Leap) has now been made right.

The end of the Maker Saga, or whatever this complete story might wind up being called, has set the conditions for the age of superheroes in the Ultimate Universe. Marvel said as much in the Ultimate Universe: Finale wrap-up issue, in which Tony Stark shared his vision of the now limitless potential ahead for this Marvel timeline.

May Parker Becomes The Next Ultimate Venom

Author Jonathan Hickman’s Ultimate Spider-Man run reinvented Venom as a piece of advanced technology, rather than an alien symbiote. Peter Parker sported the suit for a time, and in one of the book’s many fun surprises, it was later picked up by his teenage son Richard, who became a costumed vigilante alongside his father, in a nod to the original Spidey’s teenage origins.

The final beat for the Parker clan in Ultimate Universe: Finale #1 is an equally delightful reveal: Richard’s younger sister May Parker has started taking the black suit out webslinging herself. For longtime Spider-Man fans, it’s a satisfying full-circle moment; May is named for the baby Peter and Mary Jane’s mainstream Marvel counterparts lost in the 1990s, who would almost certainly be a full-fledged superhero in her own right today.

It’s Officially the End of An Era for Ultimate Marvel: Our Final Verdict

3 years later, the Ultimate Marvel Universe is saying goodbye for now; it was a grand experiment, but were the results a successor failure?

Ultimate May Parker isn’t the first alternate version of the character to fulfill that missed opportunity, but she could turn out to be the most significant. In fact, she could turn out to be the future of the Ultimate brand, if Marvel invests in her.

The Real Victor Von Doom Stands Up In His Ultimate Debut

Ultimate Universe: Finale #1 was full of teases for the future, but it saved its biggest cliffhanger for its concluding page. That is, the introduction of Victor Von Doom. The Ultimate Universe 2.0 previously featured a radically different take on Doom. Instead of Latverian royalty, he was another Reed Richards variant who was tortured and scarred by the Maker. Now, his story is over, but the true Doom’s is just beginning.

Victor Von Doom is one of the many powerful Marvel characters whose origin story the Maker interfered with. At the end of Finale, he has learned the truth about who he is supposed to be, and finds it very intriguing. Moreover, he possesses the remnants of the Maker, his traditional nemesis “Richards,” and he declares his intention to “learn” from the specimen.

With this, Doctor Doom is poised to be an important figure for the future of the Ultimate timeline. If and when his story picks up, Marvel readers will find him at a pivotal point, a crossroads moment. He could be a great villain, or a great hero, and his choices will help shape the next era of Ultimate Marvel.

Spider-Man Survives & The Parkers Get A Happy Ending

Ultimate Endgame killed off Spider-Man, but couldn’t bear to follow through on it. It’s fair to say, critically, that Spidey’s inexplicable return at the end of Ultimate Endgame #5 didn’t feel earned from a storytelling standpoint. At the same time, though, the biggest complaint about the character’s death, in Endgame #3, was that it felt abrupt. That it truncated the character’s ongoing potential.

It’s Officially The End Of An Era For Marvel

Marvel just officially marked the end of an era, but even as some beloved properties are put to rest, the future looks bright.

Clearly, Marvel agreed. Ultimate Peter Parker and his family got an upbeat ending. At least for now. And the door remains open for continuing adventures. Paired with May Parker’s nascent career as Venom, Peter’s survival means there’s a lot to be done with the Ultimate Spider-Family dynamic.

It would have been an exclamation point on the “adult Peter Parker” experiment if Marvel had led the Wallcrawler’s Ultimate Endgame demise stick. Instead, like the rest of the Ultimate books of the past several years, it now feels like fans have just seen the origin story of a Spider-Man variant that is going to be around for a while.

The Ultimate Universe Says A Bloody Goodbye To Steve Rogers

Marvel pulled its punch with Spider-Man’s death, but there was one legitimate casualty of Ultimate Endgame that wasn’t undone by the end of the miniseries. That was the death of Captain America. It was brutal. It was bloody. And this one feels permanent. Sure, Marvel could bring Ultimate Steve Rogers back down the road, but should it? Because this feels like a chance to genuinely retire the character as Cap, at least in one Marvel timelline.

Rogers’ death in Ultimate Endgame #4 has also been divisive. He went out at the hands of his villainous counterpart Captain Britain, who gruesomely beheaded the hero. It was a shock, but it also came after Captain America took down his former best friend Bucky, who’d become the Ultimate Red Skull, which many readers felt was the true end of his Ultimate Universe arc.

Decapitation is about as definitive as a death gets, but time travel is a staple of Ultimate Marvel; in fact, it’s already been used to reverse major Ultimate death scenes before. So, like any superhero fatality, take Ultimate Steve Rogers being gone “forever” with a grain of salt. Still, for now, there is an air of finality to it.

“The Ultimate Universe Will Return”

the ultimate universe will return
the ultimate universe will return

Yes, we’ve alluded to it throughout this list, but Marvel confirmed that “The Ultimate Universe will return in Finale, the denouement to Ultimate Endgame. It’s something most savvy Marvel readers expected, but Finale made it official. The Ultimate saga Marvel has been telling since 2023 is done, but the future of the Ultimate Universe remains a big question mark.

There are plenty of dangling plot threads left for a revitalized line of Ultimate books to pick up on, but fans don’t know yet what titles might be coming next, or when. And there’s also the question of whether Marvel will do another self-contained Ultimate era, or if it will now be ready to commit to the Ultimate Universe as an ongoing timeline.

Either way, the Ultimate Universe is looking at a brighter future, and it’s clearly going to factor into Marvel’s big plans for the next several years. Meaning for anyone who waited until the complete story was finished to check out Ultimate Marvel 2.0, now’s the time to tear through it in anticipation of whatever comes next.

What do you think, Marvel fans? Was the Ultimate saga satisfying as a complete story? What do you think comes next?
