6 Netflix Animated TV Shows We Cannot Wait To See (#1 Will Be The Ultimate Comic Book Adaptation)

[

Netflix has multiple upcoming animated projects, but these six stand out among the rest as the most exciting. Animated series have grown from something just for children to a medium that appeals to audiences of all ages. Plenty of adult animated TV shows exist that are just as high quality as anything targeted towards children.

While many streamers have taken steps forward in this regard, Netflix is one of the best at producing top-notch animated TV shows. These six upcoming TV shows offer thrilling stories that span multiple genres. Whether it’s fangs and blood or sci-fi and supernatural, there’s a little bit of something for everyone.

Since Netflix announced the show in 2024, Midnight Sun has been one of the most highly anticipated young adult TV shows. Rather than simply remaking the original movies, the fantasy TV show will adapt Stephanie Meyer’s 2020 book Midnight Sun, which retells the story of the first book from Edward Cullen’s perspective.

Rather than making the show live-action, they are animating the series. This is the smartest way they could approach a Twilight TV show. The movies are having a resurgence in popularity, so there’s definitely an audience for the series. Plus, Edward’s perspective provides value to the story, so there’s a good reason to make the story into a series.

What’s more, the animated format gives them a lot of creative freedom. They can decide whether to replicate the actors’ general appearances from the movies or lean into the descriptions in the books. The animators can choose a variety of styles that would shift the tone. They could lean into vampires looking like they’re on fire in the sun, which is what Bella thinks when she first sees Edward in the sun and how he describes it in Midnight Sun.

Ultimately, Midnight Sun could reinvigorate the Twilight series onscreen without completely overshadowing the movies that came before.

Motel Transylvania

With Genndy Tartakovsky at the helm, it’s no surprise that the animation of the Hotel Transylvania series is top-notch. What’s more, the franchise started out extremely entertaining. The comedy was strong throughout the first two movies. Unfortunately, it got a little lost in the third movie and completely jumped the shark in the fourth.

Motel Transylvania feels exciting because it offers the franchise a chance to get back to basics. The biggest appeal of the first two Hotel Transylvania movies was the hotel setting and all the goofy and eccentric monsters who came to stay. The third and fourth movies abandon the setting and basic premise, which is why they struggled so much. But Motel Transylvania remembers what started everything.

Motel Transylvania will once again center on Drac, Mavis, and the monster guests coming to stay at their place. Instead of a hotel in Transylvania, they’ll be running a motel in the middle of a desert part of California. The new setting allows for some new monsters and a whole different culture of visitors. Plus, Motel Transylvania could poke fun at Hollywood because of its California setting.

Mafalda

One of the most beloved comic strips in Latin America is Mafalda, which follows a witty six-year-old girl who constantly questions the world around her. She and her friends navigate the world, offering their perspective on everything from global events to parenting choices. The spunky little girl is surrounded by a compelling group of characters who are just as lovable.

The Mafalda comics are perfect for anyone who loves The Peanuts and Wallace the Brave. They offer a surprisingly complex perspective on serious topics without feeling too heavy. Plus, they maintain the childlike wonder and curiosity that makes children’s perspectives so interesting.

Now, the Argentinian comic is coming to life as a Spanish-language Netflix show made by Oscar-winning filmmaker Juan José Campanella and his production company Munoloco CGI. While Netflix hasn’t released much about the new show, Campanella has confirmed that he’s passionate about preserving the core elements of the original comics.

Aside from the excitement of seeing Mafalda on the screen in A+ animation, the show is exciting because of the world we’re living in right now. Many of Mafalda’s questions and comments about the world feel extremely timely, even though the comic was released between 1964 to 1973. Plus, it can bring the character into today’s world, allowing her to comment on current issues that would resonate with potential audiences.

Ghostbusters: The Animated Series

Netflix’s Ghostbusters animated TV show and movie were announced back in 2022 as a partnership between the streamer and Sony Animation. Unfortunately, they remained tight-lipped for quite some time, making it difficult to get excited. Director Gil Kenan confirmed to that they were very active in development. However, nothing was shared about the settings or stories until February 2026.

Industry insider Jeff Sneider went on The Hot Mic podcast on March 5, 2026, and he provided alleged details about the upcoming movie and TV show. The movie is said to be told from a ghost’s perspective rather than the Ghostbusters. Meanwhile, the TV show will explore the group in the 1990s, during Walter Peck’s first run for mayor.

It’s important to note that Sneider is a moderately reliable source, but neither Netflix nor Sony Animation has confirmed these details. As such, these are still technically rumors. That being said, the idea of a Ghostbusters animated TV show in the 90s is invigorating.

It’s clever to go backward in the timeline instead of forward. There is so much lore to explore there, and the show could introduce a whole new slate of characters. Additionally, in its animated format, Ghostbusters: The Animated Series will appeal to children, attracting a whole new wave of fans.

Sparks of Tomorrow

Kyoto Animation has had a long road since an arson attack killed many people and delayed all of its projects in 2019. They are only just starting to get back on their feet six years later. Most of their projects have been sequels or stories set within an existing world. However, their next project, Sparks of Tomorrow, explores a new-to-TV story that is expected to be Kyoto Animation’s next masterpiece.

Set in a steampunk alternate history in 1907 Kyoto, the story follows Inako Momokawa, a teen girl who doesn’t want the life her family expects, and Kihachi Sakamoto, a teen boy who dreamed of pioneering the Age of Electricity but has lost hope. The two work together to find the 20th Century Electrical Catalog, which could change the world forever.

Sparks of Tomorrow’s art style is absolutely stunning, the movement of the characters is fluid, and the premise is extremely interesting. Given Kyoto Animation’s history, there’s no reason to believe this won’t be named one of the best anime of the year, alongside the incredible slice-of-life Journal With Witch.

Something Is Killing The Children

BOOM! Studios’ Something Is Killing the Children was a massive success against all odds, as it wasn’t published by Marvel or DC. The comics won one Eisner and multiple Ringo awards. Now, it could be the next Walking Dead, introducing mainstream audiences to a fantastic horror story that started in comic books.

The story follows Erica Slaughter, a member of a secret monster-hunting society, who comes to Archer’s Peak, where children are going missing, either never coming home or returning with wild stories of monsters. The comic is thrilling, gory, and incredibly well written. The art style is absolutely iconic. Luckily, Something Is Killing The Children will be simultaneously adapted as a live-action movie and an animated Netflix TV show.

While it’s still early in development, there is every reason to believe that Something Is Killing the Children will be successful. The Blumhouse team is committed to staying true to the vision of James Tynion IV and Werther Dell’Edera, who wrote and illustrated the comics. Plus, the comic is packed with blood, gore, and violence, making it the perfect choice for adult horror lovers.
