The Avatar cycle entails that a single soul will reincarnate across generations to master all four elements, such that every era inherits a protector capable of world-shaping power. While the Avatar state gives every incarnation access to the wisdom and martial prowess of their past lives, combat potency varies wildly from one era to the next.
Due to individual temperament, early mastery of the bending disciplines, differences in tutors, and the sheer hostility of the era they are born into, some Avatars leave a far more terrifying mark on history than others. The reincarnation line is full of benders whose personal feats reshaped the world’s geography and whose powers rank among the very greatest in history.
From ancient pioneers like Wan, who defined what it means to be an Avatar alongside Raava, to forces of nature like Kyoshi, who could fracture the mainland and forge an island, these Avatars have rightly earned their place among the strongest in history. Rightly so, this article counts down the 6 strongest Avatars in Avatar: The Last Airbender history.
Avatar Wan
Avatar Wan was the first Avatar ever and set the standard against which all others are measured. He lived in a time when humans rode the backs of massive lion turtles to hide from hostile spirits, and he began his journey not as a hero but as a thief fighting the tyrannical Chou family to feed his starving neighbors.
After being banished from his home, he spent months honing his martial skill, turning firebending from crude, tool-like blasts into a fluid martial art. As he visited other Lion Turtles, Wan became the first mortal to wield multiple elements by having Raava, the spirit of peace and light, hold the elemental energies within herself until he could master them.
Consequently, Wan permanently fused his soul with Raava in the Spirit World during Harmonic Convergence, creating the first Avatar State and using all four elements at once to defeat and trap the dark spirit Vaatu inside the Tree of Time. Wan died on the battlefield, reassured by Raava that their fused spirit would reincarnate across endless generations.
Avatar Roku
Born into Fire Nation nobility, Avatar Roku grew up alongside Crown Prince Sozin as a close friend and confidant, completely unaware that he would be announced as the Avatar on his sixteenth birthday. Roku then spent decades traveling across the globe, mastering the four elements and training rigorously with the Air Nomads, the Northern Water Tribe, and the Earth Kingdom.
His long, disciplined journey gave him the time and experience to fully transform into a realized Avatar and master all four elements. His fighting style showcased his overwhelming power and precision, capable of bending vast streams of pure lava, creating massive tidal waves to extinguish volcanic fires, and carving deep trenches into the earth with minimal effort.
When Roku was forced into conflict with Fire Lord Sozin over the Fire Nation’s imperialist expansion, he quickly destroyed the sovereign’s defenses and royal palace, showing that even without the Avatar State, his bending was nearly unmatched. When he did tap into the Avatar State, his power was so cataclysmic that he could bring an active supervolcano to a standstill.
Avatar Korra
Avatar Korra is one of the most physically gifted fighters in history, and she was the first Avatar to master metalbending. Korra was a prodigy from early childhood and could instinctively bend water, earth, and fire before age ten, with no prior training. Unlike Aang, Korra had no reluctance toward violence and often favored conflict over dialogue.
Her eagerness to embrace her role as the Avatar and her action-first mindset initially blinded her to the spiritual responsibilities of her title, but after overcoming many obstacles, she secured her place in history as a great Avatar for the modern age. Her combat style is aggressive and direct, relying heavily on close-quarters combat mixed with raw elemental force.
Additionally, she effectively integrated modern pro-bending footwork into her traditional forms, making her exceptionally agile when weaving between attacks. After training with Suyin Beifong, she became the first Avatar to master metalbending; she mastered spirit-bending to purify corrupted dark spirits and developed a high-level energy-bending ability, capable of redirecting massive energy blasts and restoring lost bending.
Conclusively, Korra is one of the strongest Avatars in history, and she was able to perform impossible feats such as defeating the Dark Avatar Unalaq, absorbing a point-blank blast from a spirit-powered cannon, and tearing open a brand-new portal into the Spirit World. Korra’s decision to leave the spirit portals open ultimately led to the return of the airbenders.
Avatar Aang
Through the Avatar: The Last Airbender series, Avatar Aang made his mark as one of the most remarkable figures in history, putting an end to the Hundred-Year War and serving as the bridge between ancient tradition and a modern, interconnected world. Aang was identified as the Avatar at an extremely young age, in a very turbulent era.
Aang was already an airbending master at the age of 12, the youngest in history to gain his tattoos at the time for inventing the air-scooter technique. Overwhelmed by the sudden burden of his destiny, Aang fled the northern air temple and inevitably got trapped in an iceberg for 100 years.
His circumstances forced him to master all four elements in under a year, developing an adaptive battle style that combined principles from every bending style. Prodigies taught Aang, each a master of their element at a young age; even so, he is in a class of his own, becoming a fully realized Avatar in a year.
Aang is the first Avatar to learn lightning redirection and master energy bending, allowing him to strip a person of their ability to bend the elements. He was taught true firebending by the ancient dragons Ran and Shaw. His skill in energy bending is so profound that he was able to restore Avatar Korra’s bending post-mortem.
Avatar Yangchen
Despite her Air Nomad origins, Avatar Yangchen was ruthless and remains one of history’s most revered and feared figures. She served as Avatar during a volatile era. From an early age, Yangchen could access the memories of her past lives; as a child, she was plagued by vivid, overwhelming flashes of their emotions and memories.
At first, her hypersensitivity was crippling, but once she learned to bear the weight of those previous incarnations, it shaped her into an empathetic yet pragmatic political force that understood the cost of conflict better than anyone. In combat, Yangchen was unmatched, and her lethality went beyond typical Air Nomad pacifism. She was willing to take human lives if necessary.
Consequently, she honed devastatingly lethal airbending techniques that she didn’t hesitate to use when human life and global stability were on the line. Most notably, she utilized a localized vacuum effect that could essentially strip all the oxygen from a room. With her raw power, she could manipulate hurricane-force gales capable of uprooting forests and changing local weather patterns.
Avatar Yangchen was so terrifying that warlords and criminals would routinely surrender at the mere thought of her presence. Yangchen achieved global peace, and no major wars erupted during her lifetime; however, she did so by prioritizing human needs over powerful ancient spirits that encroached on settled lands. Her impact was so powerful that people built shrines in her honor for centuries.
Avatar Kyoshi
Avatar Kyoshi is a force to be reckoned with, ranking among the most formidable, fearsome, and pragmatically uncompromising figures in the ten-thousand-year history of the Avatar cycle. Kyoshi stood at an intimidating height of nearly 7 feet and wore iconic gold-embroidered silk robes and sharp face paint that would later become synonymous with the Kyoshi warriors.
The bending style Kyoshi used strongly reflected her immense physical stature and overwhelming raw force. Early in her training, she struggled with precise strikes, often accidentally launching massive boulders when she wanted to move pebbles. To harness her vast chi, she adopted her mother’s golden metal war fans, which allowed her to bend the elements with lethal precision.
Moreover, Kyoshi has complete mastery of high-level earthbending, including rare sub-techniques such as lavabending and dust-stepping, an art that allows her to create microscopic footholds of earth in mid-air, giving her greater mobility. While in the Avatar state, Kyoshi can shift continental plates and reshape local geography in seconds.
Her most legendary feat came when she faced the tyrant warlord Chin the Conqueror; rather than surrender her home to him, she used the Avatar State to cut through deep subterranean bedrock, split the land with lava-bending, and push the newly formed Kyoshi Island miles out into the sea using airbending. She extended her life using a special meditative technique.
