Superman is one of the most universally recognized comic book icons ever, introduced in the debut issue of Action Comics all the way back in 1938. Ever since then, there have been countless reimaginings of the hero, all sharing consistent features across iterations, yet featuring unique traits that clearly set them apart.

One of the most notable differences across versions is simply how powerful each incarnation is. Along with their distinct storylines, these characters often come with varying levels of strength as well as whole new special abilities. Consequently, many have ended up far stronger than the original, and this piece highlights some of the variants that are definitively superior in that regard.

Infinite Frontier Superman

Infinite Frontier is a DC Comics relaunch that took place in 2021. It follows the events of Dark Nights: Death Metal, Generations, and Future State, where the DC Universe expanded from a Multiverse to an Omniverse. In this landscape, all of DC history is conjoined into a single continuity, meaning characters like Superman retain several qualities across high-profile iterations.

Alongside his memories, he assumes all the powers he possessed in previous canon timelines, giving him access to some of Superman’s most potent abilities across generations. This also means all the feats belonging to past versions of the hero can be attributed to this variant, ensuring there is no shortage of evidence to prove his immense strength.

Superman Blue and Superman Red

Superman Blue and Superman Red are, as their names would suggest, blue and red versions of Superman. Their origins, however, differ depending on what ages they were released in. The original pair hailing from the Silver Age worked together and achieved some of Superman’s most desired goals, such as reforming Lex Luthor and restoring parts of his homeworld.

The pair hailing from the Modern Age, on the other hand, emerged when Superman mutated into an entity made of pure energy. After being trapped by Cyborg Superman, he accidentally split into two distinct entities, Blue and Red. They were each fitted with containment suits representing their respective colors, though neither could stand being around the other.

The Blue half displayed a remarkably calm and strategic mindset, while the Red half was far more hot-headed, aggressive, and impulsive. Most importantly, while these versions exchanged a large part of Superman’s classic physical strength, they were greatly enhanced with entirely new energy-based abilities that ultimately made them stronger than the original.

All-Star Superman

All-Star Superman is one of the most definitive depictions of the Man of Steel, brilliantly representing everything the selfless hero stands for. His story is set in motion when he rescues a team of scientists in a research vessel operating near the sun. As a result, Superman is exposed to catastrophic levels of radiation that prove fatal even for him.

It comes to light that the incident was manufactured by Lex Luthor, aiming to eliminate Superman once and for all. Ultimately, his plan succeeded, as Superman was estimated to have just one year left to live. Luckily, this extensive solar saturation also brought tremendous benefits, as his raw power increased drastically alongside new abilities.

He immediately turned his attention to doing as much good as possible before his eventual demise, most notably completing the iconic Twelve Labors of Superman. Right before his death, he also returned to stop a rampaging Luthor one last time, and repaired Earth’s dying sun after evolving into a solar consciousness.

Superboy-Prime

Superboy-Prime is a version of Superman who originally existed without superpowers in a reality named Earth-Prime where superheroes only existed in comic books. After a cosmic rift opened in his Earth, he encountered the Superman from Earth-One and awakened to the classic Kryptonian abilities, subsequently being recruited to aid in his endeavors.

He joined in the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover to defeat the Anti-Monitor. Unfortunately, he saw his homeworld destroyed amidst the struggle and was trapped in a pocket space known as the Paradise Dimension. In what is undoubtedly his most famous feat, while frustrated at ongoing events, he shattered the dimensional wall himself, altering the fabric of reality.

This is referred to by many as the “Retcon Punch,” as his physical blows caused shockwaves throughout the timeline that altered entire histories. They didn’t just affect his universe either, having several consequences for the multiverse as well. Superboy-Prime experienced a complicated trajectory from that point forward, descending into villainy but eventually rediscovering his heroic roots.

Milkman Man

Milkman Man is an extremely surreal take on Superman, engineered by the multiversal corporation Retconn. They are an interdimensional corporate entity that rewrites comic book realities to make them more marketable. They plotted to sell Prime Earth for profit, but after realizing they couldn’t alter Superman to their corporate standards, they instead manufactured a genetic clone named Milkman Man.

In addition to Superman’s regular powers, Milkman Man possessed reality-altering milk that could reshape the minds of whoever he fed it to. Completely devoted to Retconn’s cause, he spread the substance amongst some of DC’s most popular characters despite fierce opposition, easily overpowering iconic figures like Batman and Wonder Woman.

Strange Visitor Superman

Strange Visitor Superman is a timeless variant of the comic book icon who illustrates just how long the beloved champion can keep up his heroic crusade. He performed his role as Superman over decades in an exemplary fashion, going through many of the standard events fans have come to expect from his story.

This version of Superman would go even further, outlasting entire planets and even gods. He was able to split himself into several copies and developed the ability to withhold the end of time singlehandedly. The most significant event in his history would be the loss of the starship Phaethon, a red-kryptonite-powered ship that vanished early in his superhero career.

At some point in his timeline, Mr. Mxyzptlk revealed to him that the lost Phaethon had survived, but was trapped beyond time. Utilizing the supreme abilities he developed over eons, he tore the fabric of reality and caught up with the missing ship, promising to accompany its residents for the rest of their journey.

Superman Prime One Million

Superman Prime One Million is another variant of the illustrious superhero who amassed absurd levels of power over an extended period. He served his regular time as Metropolis’ invincible guardian, departing Earth after outliving his loved ones. He left towards the end of the twenty-first century, leaving the planet in the hands of his heir, Superman Secundus.

He spent that entire era thoroughly exploring the vast cosmos, gaining profound wisdom and boundless new abilities up until his eventual return just around the 700th century. Upon returning, he struck a sacred pact with his extraordinary bloodline and retreated back into the Fortress of Solitude situated deep inside the sun.

When he emerged several millennia later, he effortlessly defeated supreme beings like the sentient sun, Solaris, while wielding a powerful Green Lantern ring sent his way sometime in the past. Unlike All-Star Superman, he solely reaped the benefits of prolonged solar exposure, which ultimately amplified his powers to exponential levels.

Cosmic Armor Superman

Cosmic Armor Superman, also recognized as the Thought Robot, is an extraordinarily powerful entity that operates closer to a plot device than a traditional character. It was created by the original Monitor, Dax Novu, in order to protect the multiverse from himself when he would eventually emerge as the corrupted Dark Monitor Mandrakk.

The robot could only be piloted by the combined consciousness of Superman (Kal-El) and his Earth-Three counterpart, Ultraman. It operates with vast multiversal-scale powers and can adapt to whatever threat it faces, no matter how big or overwhelming it may be. Furthermore, it possesses comprehensive reality-warping abilities and immeasurable raw power.

It defeated the Dark Monitor Mandrakk when he emerged, knocking him over the Monitor Sphere and pushing him into the Overvoid. It exists as a nigh-omniscient being that is simultaneously aware of everything going on in the multiverse. After the battle against the Dark Monitor, it was seemingly shut down permanently as it had served its purpose.
