- James Gunn has updated fans on Peacemaker‘s future
- The DC Studios co-chief says a third season might not happen
- Fans think its current season will set up a different DC Universe TV show
James Gunn has shared a disappointing update on the future of Peacemaker, but it’s not all bad news for the titular anti-hero and his show’s supporting cast.
Interviewed by different outlets after the release of Peacemaker season 2 episode 6, Gunn admitted a third season of the HBO Max show might not happen. However, Gunn indicated that the series’ latest installment could set up another DC Universe (DCU) TV series – and fans think they know what it’ll be.
Let’s start with Gunn’s comments on the likelihood of Peacemaker season 3. Asked by Deadline if he and fellow DC Studios co-chief Peter Safran will renew the show for another outing, Gunn said: “You’re gonna find out more in [season 2] episode 8 because it’s not necessarily that [a third season of Peacemaker].
“Some of these characters will continue,” Gunn continued before adding, “But, also, it’s not exactly Peacemaker 3. I’m not ruling it out. You’ll see (episode) 8 and maybe you’ll find out a little bit more.”
Gunn gave a near-identical answer when Collider inquired about whether season 3 was in development.
“It is not right now,” he said. “That doesn’t mean there aren’t plans for these characters, but it’s not necessarily season 3 of Peacemaker. And then people should watch [season 2] episode 8 to see what happens, because maybe some of your questions will be answered in that episode by itself.”
Will Peacemaker season 2 lead into the DCU’s Amanda Waller TV show?
As Gunn suggested, this doesn’t mean that Peacemaker is canceled. Instead, the final episode of Peacemaker season 2 could set the stage for another DCU project that its eclectic cast of characters could make the leap to – and DC comic book fans think they know which one it’ll be, too.
When Gunn announced the initial movie and TV line-up for DCU Chapter One, aka ‘Gods and Monsters’, in early 2023, one project was said to revolve around Amanda Waller. She’s the disgraced former director of ARGUS played by Viola Davis in 2021’s The Suicide Squad film, as well as the first seasons of Peacemaker and Creature Commandos.
Since that initial reveal, progress on this DCU Chapter One TV series has been slow-moving. Last month, Gunn told People Magazine that work on the untitled Waller project has “not been the fastest”, but indicated it hadn’t been shelved.
In light of Gunn’s comments about Peacemaker season 3, fans are now convinced that one of the best HBO Max shows‘ second season will directly lead into the Waller-fronted production. Indeed, threads on the DCULeaks and DC_Cinematic Reddit pages are populated with fans theorizing this will be the case. Given Waller’s ties to Peacemaker and numerous other characters in the eponymous character’s show, this isn’t such an outlandish prospect.
There’s further evidence in the pages of DC Comics, too, with Waller forming an offshoot of Task Force X – the group of villains and anti-heroes she commanded in The Suicide Squad – called The Agency. That small, covert branch is the precursor to another organization known as Checkmate, which has previously counted Peacemaker characters among its lengthy roster, including Chris Smith/Peacemaker, Adrian Chase/Vigilante, and Sasha Bordeaux.
Characters who appeared in Gunn’s Superman movie, including Michael Holt/Mr. Terrific and even Clark Kent’s perennial love interest, Lois Lane, have also been a part of Checkmate. G.I. Robot, who’s still part of Creature Commandos‘ Task Force M heading into Creature Commandos season 2, was once part of the Checkmate team, too.
At this point, then, is it all but confirmed that Peacemaker season 2 will not only lead into the Waller-fronted TV series but also be called Checkmate? We’ll have to wait until this season’s finale airs on October 9/10 for an official confirmation, but all of the signs are certainly pointing in that direction.
