As if the best streaming services’ October schedules weren’t already packed enough, Hulu has announced an equally big list of new movies that are set to be added to the platform throughout the month. To help you narrow down your watchlist, I’ve picked out three films that I think you shouldn’t miss.
From a Tim Burton classic to a very divisive Christmas action movie, my top picks all have over 90% on Rotten Tomatoes from the critics, earning the validation of critics and movie lovers alike. So, what’re you waiting for? Check out my top picks for October 2025 below as well as the full list of new Hulu movies.
Edward Scissorhands (1990)
RT score: 90%
Age rating: PG-13
Runtime: 105 minutes
Director: Tim Burton
Arriving on: October 1
Not only is Edward Scissorhands one of Tim Burton’s best pieces of work, but it’s one of the best movies for welcoming October. Trust me, once you watch it, you’ll be crawling back for more.
In this dark and alternative spin on a classic fairy tale, Edward (Johnny Depp) is the creation of a scientist (Vincent Price) who dies before completing him. Now, Edward lives alone in a castle atop a hill with clusters of metal scissors as hands, but despite his extreme appearance, Edward is quiet and gentle – just beware of sharp edges.
When a saleswoman called Pen Boggs (Dianne Weist) finds him, she takes pity on Edward and takes him home to her family, much to their dismay. Now left to adapt to his new surroundings, Edward becomes a local celebrity and takes a particular liking to Peg’s daughter Kim (Winona Ryder), but when he’s falsely accused of a crime the town turns against him, but Kim is the only one who sees him for who he truly is.
Die Hard (1988)
RT score: 94%
Age rating: R
Runtime: 131 minutes
Director: John McTiernan
Arriving on: October 1
Die Hard‘s status as a Christmas film has been long debated among movie fans, but I think it’s safe to say that the majority of us would in fact call this a Christmas movie. Although is doesn’t quite have the cozy and wholesome feeling like a typical Christmas movie, it takes place in peak holiday season.
New York policeman John McClane (Bruce Willis) travels to LA to spend Christmas vacation with his wife Holly (Bonnie Bedelia) and daughter, and to attend the Christmas party at the business Holly works at. While at the party, a group of robbers led by Hans Gruber take over the building and hold the occupants hostage – all except John who manages to escape.
John realizes that he’s the only one that can save the hostages from danger, and enters in a do-or-die game to help defeat the gang of thieves.
The Cabin in the Woods (2011)
RT Score: 92%
Age rating: R
Runtime: 95 minutes
Director: Drew Goddard
Arriving on: October 16
The Cabin in the Woods balances horror with sci-fi and thriller tropes, making it a true triple threat. It’s a also nice and easy watch with a twist ending that will leave your jaw on the floor – and there’s quite a surprise acting cameo, too.
Five college students take a trip to a secluded cabin for a weekend trip away, but what starts out as a normal vacation turns into something darker. When they arrive, they notice strange things happening and are convinced that something is lurking in the walls, until they accidentally awaken a gang of killer zombies when sifting through artifacts in the cabin’s basement.
Their fight for survival grows tougher, but they soon find that there’s more than meets the eye to what lurks within the cabin.
