Far from winding down, it seems as though several leading camera brands could see out 2025 with a bang. Reliable sources from inside the rumor mill are teasing info about upcoming camera gear from Canon, Sony, Leica, DJI, Fujifilm and more.
I keep track of such rumors and, if the current crop turns out to be accurate, it could be an exciting six weeks ahead. I’ve put together five of the most exciting camera launches tipped for October and November this year below, in chronological order of when we could expect these cameras to come to market.
Camera rumors are exactly that – rumors. So please take the information below with a pinch of salt. That being said, I only include information from sources with a solid track record. Without further ado, let’s get to it…
1. Leica M EV-1
- First Leica M camera without a rangefinder
- Leica’s 60MP sensor is likely
- Tipped for October 23
It seems as though there could be a new kind of Leica M camera on the horizon – a so-called Leica M EV-1, without Leica’s legendary rangefinder.
No doubt a controversial release in the eyes of many traditional Leica fans, the M EV-1 is rumored to have an electronic viewfinder (EVF) instead of the optical rangefinder that Leica M cameras are famed for, and it’s tipped for release on October 23.
According to Leica Rumors, the M EV-1 looks set to inherit a mix of M11 and Q3 features, including the 60MP full-frame sensor, and is sensibly being touted as like a Q3 (Leica’s premium fixed lens compact) with Leica’s M lens mount design. It is already polarizing opinion.
The optical rangefinder is a defining component of Leica M cameras (the ‘M’ stands for Messsucher, which is the German word for rangefinder, after all), and so ripping out that component and replacing it with a modern electronic viewfinder could amount to heresy.
However, camera technology has changed in the seventy years since Leica debuted the M-mount, which by the way is the oldest remaining active lens mount – many others have come and gone since. And when compared to modern cameras, rangefinders can feel old hat.
An EVF could make for an easier user experience in terms of nailing sharp focus, complete with focus peaking. However, being an M it’ll still be manual focus-only camera. EVFs are also cheaper components to manufacture than a rangefinder, so we can expect this latest M to cost a fair whack less than the current M11.
2. Fujifilm X-T30 III
- Successor to the four-year-old X-T30 III
- Beginner mirrorless camera with older 26MP sensor
- Could be unveiled on October 23, with new kit lens
Another launch tipped for October 23 is the X-T30 III, which could become one of Fujifilm’s best sellers. Courtesy of The New Camera,rumors suggest it’ll be the retro camera maker’s entry-level model for photographers, supposedly sharing much of the same tech as the video-focused X-M5, including the previous generation 26MP sensor.
While its video features could be stripped back compared to the X-M5, X-T30 III users will get a viewfinder instead of the rear screen-only setup of the small X-M5.
I expect the rumored X-T30 III will have a film simulation dial like recent models such as the X-T50 – a pricier model with similar design, only with the latest 40MP stabilized sensor.
And the same rumor suggests it’ll launch alongside a new kit lens which could update the existing 15-45mm, and be available with the X-T30 III for surely the low end of the Fujifilm’s price range.
3. Canon EOS R6 Mark III
- Mid-range full-frame mirrorless camera
- Upgrade of the EOS R6 II, with stabilized 32MP sensor
- Set to land on November 9
Tipped for a November 9 announcement by Canon Rumors, the EOS R6 III looks set to upgrade the EOS R6 II with a stabilized version of the 32MP sensor, as found in the recent in EOS C50 cinema camera.
That’ll be quite the resolution bump from the 24MP EOS R6 II, and could see Canon overtake Nikon’s Z6 III as our top full-frame mirrorless camera pick for most people, especially if open gate 7K video recording is inherited from the EOS C50 too. Such a feature would set the EOS R6 III apart from rivals.
That all being said, if the EOS R6 III lands in November, it could have fresh competition within weeks if this next rumor is accurate…
4. Sony A7 V
- Full-frame mirrorless camera with 33MP sensor
- Likely to get Sony’s current autofocus and AI chip
- Could land late November
The long wait for a Sony A7 IV successor could be over soon, according to Sony Alpha Rumors, which is citing sources that claim the A7 V could land before we hit December.
A couple of leaked images, supposedly of the A7 V, teased a 33MP picture size being displayed on the camera’s rear screen. That’s the same resolution as the A7 IV, which is still competitive today, but which is leaving Sony fans wondering what upgrades to expect.
It could be the case that the sensor is a new kind – for example, a powerful stacked sensor would boost performance and bolster the A7 V’s all-rounder credentials.
Based off existing Sony cameras, we can expect an AI chip for Sony’s latest subject detection autofocus – the A7 series is the last in the range without this feature.
There’s some concern that the A7 V will just be an iterative update given Sony’s recent activity, which could be disappointing given the four years between releases. But the fact is, there are very few solid rumors still – the A7 V remains shrouded in mystery. If it does land in 2025, that will setup a tasty Sony vs Canon vs Nikon battle.
5. DJI Pocket 4
- An update of the popular Osmo Pocket 3
- It could feature twin cameras, and a smaller sensor
- Release tipped for late November
One of the best-selling cameras over the last two years is DJI’s tiny vlogging camera, the Pocket 3. Seemingly in every content creator’s arsenal, the Pocket 3 naturally slips into a pocket, and features a gimbal-mounted camera for smooth 4K videos on the go.
Its neat design includes a rotating touchscreen to switch between vertical and horizontal video in a flash, and it can automatically rotate the camera for selfies, again in a single button press. Pairing with wireless mics for pro-grade audio too is simple, and if you’re using one of DJI’s mics like the dinky Mic Mini, you can bypass a receiver with a direct wireless connection.
Unlike most brands, two years between launches is an age for DJI, especially when the existing model is so effective. So how will DJI improve matters with the rumored Pocket 4?
Rumors suggest there will be front and rear cameras, making it possible to record both people either side of the camera – a potentially handy tool for interviews with reactions.
The sensor might actually be smaller than the 1-inch type used by the Pocket 3. What I’m reading is that this could be a different Pocket camera, not a straight-up upgrade. However, there could also be a Pocket 4 Pro – details are sketchier on this iteration, but it makes sense that this could be a Pocket 3 upgrade.
And when can we expect DJI’s next compact vlogging camera? At the end of November, apparently.
Given what’s currently available and who stands to win or lose the most, I think the Canon EOS R6 Mark III is the stand-out model in this group of rumored cameras, while the Leica M EV1 is undoubtedly a significant shake up, at least for Leica fans.
