- OpenAI is making ChatGPT Go free for 12 months in India only
- The offer is open to new and existing users
- It’s possible that other countries will get free ChatGPT Go in the future
For a limited period, OpenAI has made ChatGPT Go – its low-cost, lightweight alternative to ChatGPT Plus – completely free of charge for 12 months in India only.
ChatGPT Go is a subscription service designed to offer the most popular features of ChatGPT Plus at a more affordable price. ChatGPT Go includes extended access to GPT-5, image generation, file uploads, and advanced data analysis. You also get longer memory for more personalized responses and access to projects, tasks, and custom GPTs.
While it’s better than the free version of ChatGPT, ChatGPT Go differs from Plus in the amount of access you get to premium features, which is less. Plus also gives you expanded access to legacy models like ChatGPT-4o and advanced tools like Deep Research, Agent mode, and Sora video creation.
The countries that have access to ChatGPT Go are generally considered to be low-income countries, but there are some notable curiosities in the list, like Norway and Spain, for example.
Why India?
Even if you are in a country that doesn’t have access to ChatGPT Go, like the U.S. or U.K., the move by OpenAI to make the service available for free for a year in India still matters, as it could be a sign of what’s coming elsewhere.
You may be wondering why OpenAI has picked India for this experiment. India is often used as a testbed for tech launches due to its massive population. It’s also one of the biggest mobile-first markets, with a large proportion of its population on Android, which aligns with OpenAI’s product.
It also shows that OpenAI is willing to experiment with aggressive (or in this case, zero) pricing in an effort to edge out competitors. If the promotion succeeds, it could lead to a similar strategy being employed elsewhere.
In India, OpenAI is competing with Google‘s Gemini, Anthropic’s Claude, and homegrown models like Kruti. Massively increasing the user base for ChatGPT via free accounts could not only influence how the tool evolves towards non U.S. user behaviours, but it could also increase its foothold in Asia.
Get it while you can
The ChatGPT Go promotion is now available for redemption via the ChatGPT website or the Google Play store, and will be available next week in the Apple App Store.
If you are in India then we’d recommend taking up the offer as soon as possible as OpenAI says it may end the deal “at any time without prior notice.”
The offer extends to current and new subscribers. Another message from OpenAI says, “If you’re a current ChatGPT Go subscriber on web or Android via the Google Play store, please do not cancel your subscription. We may automatically redeem the promotion for you later this week.”
