Christmas is just around the corner, and there’s plenty of festive fare among all the new Netflix movies arriving in December, but the TV side of things is more about some gripping binge watches for that holiday downtime.
You’d have to be living in the upside down to have missed the fact that the back half of Stranger Things‘ epic final season is set to arrive this month, but there’s also more Stephen King inspired drama and every episode of the best political show ever made dropping on Netflix before the end of the month.
Stranger Things, Season 5, Volume 2 & Volume 3
RT score: 92%
Episodes: 4
Arriving on: December 25 (Vol. 1), December 31 (Vol. 2)
It’s been a long wait for fans of Netflix’s 80s throwback but the fifth and final season has finally arrived.
With the first four episodes dropping over Thanksgiving, the good news for fans is that there’s less than a month to wait until the next batch (volume two, three episodes), with what is sure to be an epic finale following a week later on New Year’s Eve/New Year’s Day depending on where you are in the world.
We’ll stay light on spoilers for those that haven’t caught the first set of episodes yet — I don’t blame you for waiting to binge the lot back to back — but with Hawkins in lockdown, Vecna on the comeback and the stakes higher than ever, expect a jaw dropping conclusion that’s going to get emotions running high. I’d be very surprised if all of our heroes make it to the finale’s end credits, so prepare to bid a get wrenching farewell to Eleven and the gang.
Castle Rock, Seasons 1-2
RT score: 88%
Episodes: 20
Arriving on: December 16
Stranger Things isn’t the only Stephen King inspired show landing on Netflix this month, and if Welcome to Derry has whet your appetite from more from the master of horror, then pay a visit to Castle Rock.
Set in the fictional Maine town that’s the location of so many of King’s novels, Castle Rock pulls together characters and plot threads from multiple stories by the author to build a brand new narrative. If the presence of The Shining’s Dick Halloran in the IT prequel has you excited, you ain’t seen nothing yet.
Taking somewhat of an anthology approach, the show tells two different (but connected) stories over two seasons and features a stellar cast that includes André Holland, Melanie Lynskey, Jane Levy, and Lizzy Caplan alongside King movie veterans Sissy Spacek (Carrie) and Tim Robbins (The Shawshank Redemption) as well as Pennywise himself Bill Skarsgård. Nailing the author’s knack for telling high-concept tales anchored by human drama, Castle Rock is a must for Stephen King aficionados.
The West Wing, Seasons 1-7
RT score: 81%
Episodes: 154
Arriving on: December 9
Writer Aaron Sorkin’s magnum opus lands on Netflix with all seven seasons arriving just in time for a holiday binge.
Set inside the beating heart of the White House, the show follows the two-term presidency of Martin Sheen’s Josiah Bartlet, with an outstanding ensemble cast portraying a range of staff and advisers as they carry out their pulse-racing day-to-day. Featuring plenty of parlor politics and personal drama, the show cemented Sorkin’s style with the dialogue as snappy as the camera work.
We won’t go into spoilers, but story arcs focusing on the likes of mass-shootings, campaign trails and domestic terrorism are among the most celebrated, but honestly, the whole show is utterly gripping from beginning to end. If you’re looking for a show to kick back and stream episode after episode of with sweatpants and leftovers, look no further.
