I feel like I open every piece I write about Landman with the same line, but poor Tommy (Billy Bob Thornton). The man can never catch a break – whether that’s working in the soul-sucking oil business at M-Tex or thanks to his dysfunctional and erratic family.
Now Landman season 3 has been confirmed, that’s surely only going to get even worse.
Frankly, his answer gave the came away that Landman season 3 was coming – and confirms that Paramount will be milking its success for as many seasons as possible.
Landman is just too successful for Paramount+ to let season 3 slip away
Thornton told me about Tommy’s journey: “I think it’s like with an earthquake. The reason there aren’t big explosions all the time is because there are a lot of small ones that release the tension in the earth. I think that show has that element to it.
“These little things that happen because Tommy’s world isn’t a nightmare, but it’s busy. I mean, this is a guy with the weight of the world on his shoulders, goes to work, and it’s just one problem after the other. He comes home, it’s one problem after the other. The difference in when he comes home is at the end of the day.
He continued: “He really loves all the people in the family and his friends. I don’t know if there’ll be a moment this season where I finally snap, there are moments where I become sad, a few even moments of joy.”
At the time, that last sentence said it all. I remember mentally banking the moment as an indicator that Landman season 3 would be happening – and lo and behold, it’s got a renewal long before the second season has even wrapped up.
What this means for the season 2 finale, I’m not sure, but Tommy can’t be driven to total breaking point just yet. As Paramount itself said in a press statement, viewership figures of the second season’s premiere episode have increased by 262% from season 1.
There is no way Paramount wants to lose this momentum, and this means generating as many seasons of Landman as humanly possible. At this rate, Tommy will be kept on edge until at least season 17.
In season 3, I’m hoping for more Moore, Larter and Elliott… and maybe, just maybe, Tommy can have a bit of a break.
