- HBO has confirmed The Pitt will get a third season
- The news dropped ahead of the show’s season 2 premiere
- No filming start date, cast details, or release date have been announced yet
The Pitt crew are scrubbing up for another shift at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center after the hit medical drama was renewed for a third season.
Less than 24 hours before The Pitt season 2‘s makes its debut today (January 8), HBO boss Casey Bloys confirmed the multi-award-winning show would return for another installment. Bloys made the announcement at this season’s world premiere in Los Angeles on January 7.
There’s no news on how much script work has been completed, when the cameras could start rolling, and – understandably – when The Pitt season 3 will be released. It’s safe to assume, though, that Noah Wyle and the rest of the hugely successful HBO Max TV Original’s cast will return.

A runaway HBO Max show with a clean bill of health
It’s no great surprise to see that The Pitt season 3 has been greenlit.
The procedural drama has enjoyed a whirlwind year since its debut season landed on one of the world’s best streaming services last January. At the time, its first season not only earned rave reviews upon release – it still holds a 95% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes (RT) – but each of its 15 episodes ended up averaging 10 million views (per Variety) and achieving 13 weeks of consecutive growth in the lead-up to its finale. Ahead of its season 2 premiere, The Pitt’s latest chapter boasts an even better 97% RT score among critics, too.
Interest in the show has increased following The Pitt‘s multiple award wins at the 2025 Primetime Emmys and during the early weeks of the 2026 awards season.
Indeed, over the past few months, the R. Scott Gemmill-created program has – at the time of publication – won 19 gongs. Those include prestigious and ultra-competitive prizes like Outstanding Drama Series at last year’s Primetime Emmy Awards, Program of the Year at the 2026 Television Critics Association Awards, and Best Drama Series at this year’s Critics Choice Awards ceremony.
It’s unclear how much staying power a show like The Pitt will have, so it remains to be seen if season 3 will be its final entry. Right now, though, HBO is clearly delighted with how popular it is, so it was always a matter of when, not if, a third season would be announced.
