Nobody can resist a good murder mystery – and frankly, we’re spoiled for choice this winter. Not only are new seasons of The Traitors airing simultaneously in the US and UK, but Netflix has just dropped Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials, a three-part miniseries.
You might not think the two have much in common, given that one is a reality competition show, and the other is a prestige crime drama. But thanks to secret traitors, hidden mysteries, and unmissable accusations, the pair actually make for a thrilling double bill.
‘If I was a traitor, I think I’d have a panic attack every day’
“100%. Are you mad?” McKenna-Bruce replies when I ask her and Bluemel whether they’d do Celebrity Traitors – and whether starring as the leads in Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials was a sneaky audition tape for the BBC reality TV show.
“We were talking about it earlier, and we would absolutely be crying all the time. We are way too empathetic and emotional and just feel guilty the whole time.”
“I think it would be the worst two weeks of my life,” Bluemel adds. “If I were a traitor, I think I would have a panic attack every day. It would be insane, but it’s the sort of thing that nobody could turn down. Just so much fun, so iconic.”
If I were a BBC casting agent, I’d snap them both up in the blink of an eye. Walking into the room to interview them was like intruding on a sleepover party, full of giggly excitement and loud voices overlapping one another… and that means bringing the best kind of chaos to the roundtable.
Their real selves are a world away from their characters, Lady Eileen Brent and Jimmy Thesiger, but are their sleuthing skills up to scratch?
“My problem would also be that I wouldn’t want to vote anyone off,” McKenna-Bruce explains. “I’d feel so bad if I got it wrong. But also if I spelled their name wrong at the roundtable, because I do that all the time and second-guess myself. Even something as simple as ‘Tom’ I’d think was T-H-O-M.”
Having binged Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials already and there only being three episodes of The Traitors UK season 4 left as of writing, this is exactly the kind of reality TV delusion that I’m desperate to cling to. I need The Celebrity Traitors to return like I need to drink water… so I hope you’re paying attention, BBC.
