- Neon has dropped a trailer and release date for horror movie Exit 8
- It will arrive in theaters on April 10
- Exit 8 joins other recent horror adaptations such as Iron Lung and Five Nights at Freddy’s 2
Exit 8 is the next horror video game to get the big screen treatment when it arrives in theaters on April 10.
Considering we’ve seen Iron Lung‘s huge box office success and the rumored release of Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 on Peacock at some point in 2026, it’s shaping up to be a huge year for game-to-screen adaptations.
Exit 8 is similar to Iron Lung because of its creepy one-location setting. Instead of being welded into a submarine, the protagonist here finds himself trapped in a seemingly endless subway corridor trying to find Exit 8 and leave the station. Commuting is stressful enough without having to deal with all of this.
I’m sure everyone has their own opinions about the recent influx of video game movies. Personally, I’m excited, having seen that it is in fact possible to adapt a game well, just look at The Last of Us and Fallout to see what I mean. If done well, Exit 8 could definitely join my list of good video game movies.
If you’re curious or need convincing, check out the eerie Exit 8 trailer below.
Exit 8 plays on the fear of liminal space
You may be familiar with the Backrooms, a creepypasta about never-ending labyrinths featuring eerily abandoned places like empty corridors, offices, shopping malls, or indeed, subway tunnels. These are known as liminal spaces, and yeah, they freak me out too.
Exit 8 is based on the game of the same name by Kotake Create, with the movie adaptation following one man’s journey to escape the subway and leave via Exit 8. Something that shouldn’t be difficult, but when you’re trapped in one of these eerie universes, it is.
As the trailer shows, he has simple rules to follow. If anything looks out of the ordinary, he should turn back, and if everything seems fine, he should carry on. But if he gets it wrong, he’s sent back to the beginning again.
I can’t wait to see how Exit 8 is adapted for the screen; it’s got real potential, and the trailer does look promising. I’m keeping my fingers crossed.
