The Gray House is a new espionage drama set in the Civil War period that tells the story of four women spies who operate deep inside Confederate territory. Produced by Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman – who are reuniting for the first time since Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991) – the series brings to life the true stories of women spies who were instrumental in turning the tide in favor of the Union.
Inspired by real women spies in Richmond, The Gray House focuses on psychological warfare and secret alliances that shaped the war – a chapter often overlooked in Civil War history. Mother-and-daughter duo Eliza Van Lew (Mary-Louise Parker) and Elizabeth Van Lew (Daisy Head) use their elite social standing to gather crucial military information and operate a spy network in an underground railroad.
Mary Jane Richards (Amethyst Davis), meanwhile, is a former slave with a photographic memory, known for infiltrating Confederate leadership circles. The series also features a fictional fourth character – a Richmond courtesan – who uses her proximity to gather intelligence from top Confederate members. Another major attraction is that all the episodes are directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Roland Joffé (known for The Mission and The Killing Fields).
