Tired of annoying ads? NymVPN has just come to the rescue, bringing a new ad-blocking tool to desktop apps to rid you of all those pesky pop-ups.
In its latest update, version 2026.4, NymVPN has launched a new ad-blocking tool that aims to reduce the need for browser extensions by adding native blocking directly to desktop apps, alongside wider improvements to app accessibility.
The move is designed to smooth out the user experience on what calls itself the “world’s most private VPN,” as the decentralised network that has made privacy its raison d’être continues to pursue its goal of becoming one of the best VPNs — or simply the most secure in the world.
Users can now download the latest version on Windows, macOS, and Linux. NymVPN added that developments are also underway for mobile devices.
A safety boost
As NymVPN reminded its users, “blocking ads is actually a superpower when it comes to privacy,” and we couldn’t agree more.
Firstly, the pressure for online monetisation has led to ads popping up in every possible space on web pages, often disrupting the browsing experience as users have to untangle themselves from a jungle of ads.
Indeed, the more ads that are displayed, the greater the risk posed by particularly harmful pop-ups or those concealing scams, being easy to overlook amongst the noise, and their authenticity becomes more difficult to verify.
Moreover, ads can function as spyware to track user behaviour during web sessions, and even this can help digital criminals create detailed profiles that can be exploited for fraud and scams.
To avoid this from happening, the upgrade filters requests at the NymVPN client level to block requests from known ad providers as they enter the system.
This means that, unlike standalone ad-blockers, banner ads, pop-ups, and trackers, often considered the nemesis of digital users, can be blocked not just in web browsers but in any app requesting data from these sources.
NymVPN also promises quick installation: simply click on NymVPN’s settings and activate the Blocks ads option to start enjoying an ad-free experience.
With the new tool, the VPN provider is reinforcing its privacy ambitions, building on previous censorship-unlocking features and strengthening its commitment to becoming the unrivalled privacy provider.
How does it intend to do this? In short, its distributed privacy solution, still in beta, leverages blockchain technology based on the concept of ‘Mixnet’ to decentralise control over privacy.
Unlike traditional VPNs, it uses a single VPN server that employs a distributed set of ‘nodes’ that route traffic on a Mixnet through distributed nodes to obscure metadata.
The cryptocurrency ecosystem rewards node operators for providing a high-quality network to the Mixnet, with the VPN claiming that it will ensure unparalleled anonymity.
More quality-of-life updates
Additionally, NymVPN has also improved the overall accessibility and usability of its apps by introducing alternative options for account access and recovery.
This means that although the default access method involves assigning an anonymous account, you can also use your personal details to log in or recover your passphrase if you wish.
The Apple Store and Google Play Store have also been localized into 9 languages to increase NymVPN’s global reach, making the software entirely available in the local language — including all screens, descriptions, and keywords. New languages include Hindi, Turkish, and Persian.
The icing on the cake is a bug fix for previously reported errors related to ‘no active subscription’ and user display, with the VPN provider also promising a new Mixnet optimisation coming soon.
