The following contains spoilers for The Super Mario Galaxy MovieThe Super Mario Galaxy Movie‘s final scenes could be setting up a massive Nintendo crossover. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie escalates the scope of the animated Nintendo universe beyond the Mushroom Kingdom and Brooklyn-set events of the previous film. This time, Mario and his friends are forced to venture into the larger cosmos.
Along the way, they meet other notable Nintendo characters, including Fox McCloud. A refugee from another dimension, Fox is eventually able to find a way to get home thanks to Princess Rosalina. In the process, the film sets the stage for future Nintendo movies to naturally cross over in some pretty exciting ways.
Fox McCloud’s Mario Galaxy Role Set Up A Nintendo Multiverse
Foc McCloud’s inclusion in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie lays the groundwork for the animated Nintendo adaptation to have a multiverse. Fox is introduced when Peach and Toad are looking for a pilot in the Gateway Galaxy. Fox introduces himself as a refugee from another universe, which is directly inspired by the Star Fox games.
A wormhole sent him into the Mario universe, where he’s been stuck doing odd jobs as a pilot to make a living. Fox is hired by Peach, quickly befriends Mario, and even helps the heroes save Rosalina. This ends up paying dividends for Fox, because Rosalina is able to give his Arwing an interdenominational engine capable of transcending dimensions.
The film ends with Fox seemingly heading home. This could be setting up a larger Star Fox adaptation, which could be a fun addition to the larger Nintendo/Illumination franchise. However, the more intriguing possibility is that Fox could use the device to traverse all sorts of realities beyo and his own.
In essence, Fox now has the ability to go across the Nintendo multiverse and encounter all sorts of characters going forward. He and the rest of his squadmates could even become a peacekeeping force that works with heroes from different timelines, lending aid to characters like Samus in future films.
It’s a natural way to introduce the idea of other realities, meaning future Nintendo adaptations could be set within the established universe that contains the Mario, DK, and Pikmin characters or be easily explained as taking place in their own timelines. It could even set up different takes on established characters or even set up more pairings.
How Fox’s Engine And Rosalina’s Powers Could Create A Nintendo Avengers
Fox’s Arwing is bolstered by Rosalina’s power, suggesting she (and her sister Peach) also have the power needed to go through dimensions. This could be an easy way for the Nintendo films to open up new realities as a plot device, easily allowing Fox to travel the multiverse and introduce new worlds.
This could allow Fox to become the ultimate plot device for Nintendo’s cinematic future, with the Arwing traveling across realities to introduce all sorts of different characters and worlds. Fox’s adventures could also draw the attention of villainous forces like Tabuu, who was the overarching threat of Super Smash Bros. Brawl‘s campaign mode.
That could require Fox to recruit an army of heroes to save the day, laying the groundwork for a larger Super Smash Bros. movie that unites Mario’s allies with Fox’s team and any other number of available Nintendo characters. This approach would also be a useful way to establish new directions for the franchise.
While the teams behind Nintendo have tried to brush off any potential Nintendo crossover movies, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie does the necessary work to make that crossover a possibility. It might only be a matter of time before Nintendo’s film adaptations pull their own Avengers: Endgame and unite all their heroes for a massive crossover.
