Illumination and Nintendo are back in theaters this week with a brand-new Super Mario movie, but fans aren’t happy about its take on one beloved character.
Warning! Spoilers below for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie:
On April 1st, U.S. fans were given the chance to check out The Super Mario Galaxy Movie following the success of Nintendo’s last hit in theaters. With Chris Pratt back in the seat voicing Mario himself, the new sequel promised to take Nintendo’s most beloved hero on an intergalactic adventure. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie delivers just as promised with a 91% Audience Rating on Rotten Tomatoes. But in its post-credits scene, the movie takes a turn with its questionable take on Princess Daisy.
For audiences who wait in theaters for the post-credits scene, they are treated to a reunion with Ukiki. The rogue is on the road to another robbery, but the theft is foiled when a mysterious heroine stops Ukiki in their tracks. It turns out the character is none other than Princess Daisy, but rather than celebrating the cameo, netizens have taken to social media to roast the heroine’s stiff design.
As the tweets below make it clear, Nintendo fans are none too happy with The Super Mario Galaxy Movie for doing Princess Daisy dirty:
- “Why Illumination got all the princesses looking chopped.”
- “I love Daisy, but god, they need to fix her design for the third movie cause…”
- “She looked so bad I almost choked on my popcorn when she appeared.”
- “Why can’t Illumination get princess faces right?”
Clearly, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has ruffled fans with its take on Daisy. It is hardly surprising given the princess’ cult status with Nintendo lovers. Created in 1989, Princess Daisy made her debut in Super Mario Land as the ruler of Sarasaland, and her adventurous personality became the perfect foil to Princess Peach. Daisy’s reputation as a tomboy royal with a desire for fun quickly turned Daisy into a favorite with fans. The heroine’s return in Mario Tennis went on to transform Daisy into a household name with Nintendo fans, leaving many to anticipate her arrival in Illumination’s movie franchise.
Now, Daisy has made it to the big screen, but the question remains whether Nintendo did the princess justice with her design. The post-credits scene tees up the heroine’s return in a new movie, and given the buzz surrounding The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, it is hard to imagine Illumination passing on a trilogy. Only time will tell if the movies can capture Daisy’s spirit, but for now, it seems the princess’ surprise cameo in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is definitely stirring conversation.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is now showing in U.S. theaters.
