Oscar-winning Korean writer-director Bong Joon Ho has revealed that his hotly-awaited debut animated feature film will be titled Ally at the same time as unveiling a first image for its titular protagonist.
Created from a screenplay co-written by Bong with Jason Yu (Sleep), the film revolves around Ally, a curious piglet squid living in the depths of the South Pacific Ocean with dreams of one day seeing the sun and becoming the star of a wildlife documentary.
When a mysterious aircraft sinks into the ocean, Ally’s peaceful world is thrown into danger. She is thrust into an extraordinary journey that will take her all the way to the surface, accompanied by her colorful, loyal and unlikely companions. Check out a first look at the “curious and endearing” Ally below.

Inspired by real-life marine creatures, the film explores themes of friendship and courage, as encounters between humans and the creatures of the deep reshape both worlds.
In other news related to the project, the involvement of French studio Pathé as a financier, distributor and sales agent has been revealed.
Financing and distribution are handled by CJ ENM, Penture Invest, and Pathé, with Barunson C&C overseeing production. Barunson Entertainment CEO Seo Woo-sik produces the film marking his third collaboration with Director Bong, following Mother and Okja.
The film will be completed in the first half of 2027, with a worldwide theatrical release in the same year.
Pathé will handle distribution in France, Benelux, Switzerland and West Africa while CJ and Penture will distribute in South Korea, Vietnam, Turkey and Indonesia. Pathé represents international sales excluding Japan, China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, for which CJ and Penture will handle sales.
In development since 2019, the film is seen a major career milestone in Director Bong’s career as his first foray into animation after live action hits including Oscar-winner Parasite as well as Okja and Snowpiercer.
The film brings together leading creative talents from 12 countries, including South Korea, with key contributors such as animation supervisor Jae Hyung Kim (Toy Story 4, Inside Out), supervising producer David Lipman (Shrek franchise) and production designer Marcin Jakubowski (Klaus). DNEG, the world-renowned studio behind Inception and Dune, is also onboard contributing expertise in high-end 3D animation.
Talking to Deadline at the Marrakech Film Festival in Morocco last year, while serving as jury president, Bong described the making of the animation as a “very wild and tough job”.
