An artistic and commercial powerhouse, French electronic duo Daft Punk is one of the most popular and influential acts in electronic dance music—and has been since its inception in 1993. Indeed, hits such as “Around the World” and “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger” have achieved legendary status, influencing not only electronic music but funk, rock, pop, and hip hop. Racking up awards and hits on the Billboard Top 100, they’ve been cited by Rolling Stone as one of the greatest musical duos of all time and their 2013 album, Random Access Memories, has been hailed as one of the greatest albums.
Although Daft Punk split in 2021, their popularity endures. In fact, Time Outjust named their 2000 hit, “One More Time,” the best party song of all time. The track has also topped similar lists by the likes of The Village Voice, Pitchfork, and Rolling Stone.
“One More Time” Is a Distillation of Daft Punk’s Early Musical Inspirations
Daft Punk members Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo met in 1987 while attending secondary school in Paris. They immediately hit it off, bonding over their shared love of music, and began recording demo tracks with their friends. One of these collaborators was Laurent Brancowitz, with whom they formed an indie rock band called Darlin’ (named after The Beach Boys‘ song of the same name). The band was short-lived, however, and Brancowitz went on to co-found the Versailles-based band Phoenix while Homem-Christo and Bangalter formed Daft Punk in 1993.

⚡ AC/DC
You are pure, undiluted rock energy. You don’t need tricks, trends, or theatrical gimmicks — you have something more powerful: a riff that hits like a thunderbolt and an attitude that never wavers. Like AC/DC, you understand that simplicity executed with absolute conviction is its own form of genius. You’re the person in the room who doesn’t overthink it, doesn’t pretend, and never turns the volume down. The highway to hell is a state of mind — and you’ve been on it since day one.
👅 The Rolling Stones
You’ve got swagger that can’t be taught. Rooted in the blues and soaked in street-level attitude, you move through life with a loose, dangerous elegance that draws people in without ever trying too hard. Like the Stones, you’ve seen it all, done most of it, and somehow look better for it. You’re not chasing perfection — you’re chasing truth, groove, and that electric moment when everything clicks. Can’t always get what you want? You tend to get it anyway.
👑 Queen
You are magnificent, and you know it — not from arrogance, but from an unshakeable sense of self that has never needed anyone’s permission. Like Queen, you defy every category people try to place you in. You blend the epic with the intimate, the operatic with the anthemic, the serious with the playful. You live boldly, love fiercely, and perform every aspect of your life as though the whole world is watching. Because sometimes it is. We are the champions — and so are you.
🎸 The Beatles
You have the rarest of gifts: the ability to make something that feels both deeply personal and universally human. Like The Beatles, you’re a natural connector — someone whose warmth, curiosity, and creative instincts draw people together across every divide. You believe in melody, in craftsmanship, and in the quiet power of a song that says exactly what someone needed to hear. You’ve changed the people around you just by being who you are. All you need is love — and you give it generously.

Part of Daft Punk’s success can be attributed to its unique, genre-defying take on house music. The duo melds electronic beats and house beats with disco, funk, and techno. Furthermore, they bring a pop sensibility to their compositions, with their catchy rhythms and lyrics. True to their unique sound, the duo’s early inspirations were eclectic, encompassing Andy Warhol, Fleetwood Mac, Dr. Dre, Paul Johnson, Romanthony, and Todd Edwards. And these influences directly impacted the creation of “One More Time.”
“One More Time” Was Controversial When It Was Released, But Listeners Couldn’t Get Enough
“One More Time” is, in many ways, a tribute to the artists that inspired the duo to make dance music. DJ, producer, and singer Romanthony provided the song’s infectious vocals, his voice heavily auto-tuned in order to provide a distorted, futuristic effect. Upon the song’s release, the use of autotune generated controversy. Bangalter told DJ Times Magazine, however, that autotune was simply a “tool” that, when used intentionally, could work in tandem with traditional music methods rather than replace them. He compared autotune to the synthesizer, which also attracted controversy in the 1970s, as well as the electric guitar.
“One More Time” also samples Eddie Johns’ 1979 disco track “More Spell on You.” A seamless blend of Johns’ track, Romanthony’s vocals, and Daft Punk’s own unique instrumental signature, “One More Time” epitomizes the duo’s talent for reworking multiple pieces of existing material into a coherent, entirely original new piece of work. The song’s music video was a work of art in itself, too: The anime video, centering on blue humanoid aliens performing “One More Time” as a foreboding invader approaches their planet, would later be featured in the duo’s 2003 film, 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem.
Countless critics remain unconvinced about the use of autotune and sampling. Take, for instance, the pushback that Kanye West would face after the 2007 release of Graduation or the hate Charli XCX would receive in the wake of Brat in 2024. Still, the method lives on, in part, because of the artistry and success of acts like Daft Punk—and songs like “One More Time.”
Upon its release, “One More Time” hit number one on the French Singles Chart and number two on the UK Singles Chart. It charted in the United States as well, peaking at number 61 on the Billboard Hot 100. What’s more, the memorable dance anthem remains a go-to for countless partygoers, and likely will for years to come.
