Every streamer has tried to replicate the success of Taylor Sheridan‘s shows. Netflix famously passed on Sheridan’s magnum opus, Yellowstone, and has since tried to create family-oriented dramas aimed at the same demographic. Not too many of them have succeeded, however. Sheridan’s streak of success, which has mostly been restricted to the Paramount+ streaming service, actually began a few years before the launch of Yellowstone in 2018. Before he became a streaming maven, Sheridan worked on a trilogy of spiritually connected neo-noir films that received terrific reviews and earned him an Oscar nod. The first of the lot was Sicario, directed by Denis Villeneuve and starring Emily Blunt, Daniel Kaluuya, Josh Brolin, and Benicio Del Toro.
Sicario remains Sheridan’s only theatrical film to get a sequel. Released in 2018, Sicario: Day of the Soldado is generally considered inferior to the first film. It didn’t involve Villeneuve or Blunt, although Brolin and Del Toro returned. Directed by Stefano Sollima, it received less favorable reviews and wasn’t able to gross as much at the worldwide box office as the first film. A third installment, tentatively titled Sicario: Capos, was announced a few years ago with Del Toro back as the lead. Progress was reportedly impacted by the industry-wide strikes of 2023, but the movie is still said to be in the works. However, a different group of creatives went ahead and tried to capitalize on the brand’s popularity by producing and releasing a movie that many might confuse with the third installment.
Can You Hum These Iconic Film Scores? It’s the Collider Movie Quiz!
A good score elevates a film’s emotional impact. A great score affects you long after the movie’s over. Here are a few examples of that excellence.
Viewers Weren’t Too Happy After Being Duped
The movie in question was released in 2021, and is titled Night of the Sicario. It stars Natasha Henstridge, Costas Mandylor, and Addison Kendall. The film’s plot, which revolves around an agent trying to protect a young girl from drug cartels, sounds quite similar to that of Sicario 2. Directed by Joth Riggs, Night of the Sicario doesn’t have a Rotten Tomatoes score, but it holds a 3.4 out of 10 on IMDb, where viewers didn’t seem too pleased. Many of them alerted others that the film is in no way connected to the Sicario series. “I, among many, many others, got this movie because we thought it was the third in Taylor Sheridan’s franchise,” one person commented. The movie is now streaming on Paramount+ of all platforms; that’s home turf for Sheridan. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
