Villagers on the player’s island in Animal Crossing: New Horizons can ask for suggestions on what special greeting they could share once the friendship level has become high enough. This clever way of saying hi is shared between only that villager and the player, without spreading to other villagers the same way that catchphrases can do. This allows players to personalize the game in clever ways and even makes for a bit of silly immersion as the kinship with that villager gets stronger.
When multiplayer is incorporated, other players may see the catchphrases that villagers have adopted in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, but they are not able to stumble across greetings. This makes greetings all the more special and private. It’s kind of like a secret, hidden way to leave a message for the future or add a bit of cheerful levity to the game.
Whether someone wants to make their unique greetings meaningful or fun, the options can be overwhelming, so here are a few ideas to get players started.
How To Change Villager Greetings In ACNH
Timing Is Everything
In order to change a villager’s greeting in ACNH, the villager has to be the one to bring it up, making it difficult to time the situation for when someone is ready with the perfect greeting in mind.
Villagers will show a thought bubble over their heads when they are ready to change a greeting or catchphrase or, essentially, when they need anything at all from the player. Friendship levels must be at level five before this event is triggered, which means it will not happen with any new villagers until they’ve been around for a bit.
Haven’t yet seen a prompt to change a villager’s greeting in ACNH? That likely means you need to increase your friendship level with them! Keep talking to them and giving them gifts and eventually they will get there.
The chosen greeting for villagers in Animal Crossing New Horizons can be longer than nicknames and catchphrases, and it is important to pay attention to capitalization and spelling if that matters to the player. Even the first letter in the greeting will need to be capitalized when entering the suggestion, as the game will not automatically do this.
One word of caution, however, is that occasionally, villagers will put punctuation marks at the end of greetings. This is made even more difficult by the fact that this doesn’t always happen, so it’s hard to plan ahead with your greeting. Therefore, it is up to the player if they want to add any punctuation such as an exclamation mark, but be warned that the villager may add their own as well.
Animal Crossing Greeting Ideas Based On Personality Type
Personalize The Greeting To The Villager
Villagers in Animal Crossing: New Horizons are split into eight categories of personality types. These personalities determine a lot of their preferences, catchphrases, and greetings that they come with originally, as well as clothing, hobby, voice, and more. Although players can certainly change the greetings to whatever they would like, fitting the greeting to the villager’s personality can make things more immersive. It could feel strange, for example, to have a Lazy villager greeting someone with an energetic “let’s go for a run.”
Here are just a couple of suggestions for each personality type:
|
Normal Personality |
How’s it going? |
Isn’t it beautiful out? |
Drink your water. |
|---|---|---|---|
|
Lazy Personality |
So sleepy… |
I want donuts. |
Snacktime! |
|
Peppy Personality |
Hey! Listen! |
Stay Fresh! |
Achievement unlocked! |
|
Jock Personality |
Time for push-ups? |
No pain, no gain. |
Hey! My man/woman! |
|
Cranky Personality |
Humbug. |
What now? |
Seriously? |
|
Snooty Personality |
Oh, it’s you again. |
You’re wearing that? |
You’re welcome. |
|
Big Sister Personality |
Don’t you look cute today. |
Want some cookies? |
You doing okay? |
|
Smug Personality |
So, we meet again. |
Kachow! |
Spill the tea. |
The eight personalities include four personality types for males and four for females, which helps pinpoint what type a villager is. Male villagers can be either Cranky, Jock, Lazy, or Smug, while the female villagers can be either Normal, Peppy, Snooty, or Big Sister.
Even if a player doesn’t get the exact personality type, it is still fun to match a greeting to how the villager tends to act, and ultimately it is all just for fun.
ACNH Is A Good Way To Add Positive Affirmations To Your Life
Without Having To Repeat Them In A Mirror
When you’re coming up with things for the characters to say, one good suggestion that many have utilized is to include positive affirmations for yourself. Having one of your friendly villagers greet you with uplifting words of affirmation will then prompt you to think those thoughts about yourself as you read them. After all, why not make the game even more wholesome?
|
You are worthy of love. |
Hi, handsome/beautiful. |
You make me happy! |
Be kind to yourself. |
Stretch and hydrate! |
|
I’m so proud of you. |
You are capable. |
I attract light, love, and abundance. |
Trust the process of life. |
I love myself. |
|
You are a hard worker. |
I appreciate you, [Name]. |
What are you grateful for today? |
Believe and achieve. |
Let’s slay! |
|
Happiness glows from you. |
[Name], you are enough |
Peaceful mind, free to unwind. |
A force for good. |
You are inspiring. |
|
I am safe and secure. |
[Name] is amazing! |
Believe in yourself. |
Today is a good day. |
You are brave. |
While it may feel strange to say positive affirmations about yourself sometimes, especially when you don’t feel it, hearing them come from other people can make a strangely powerful impression. If you’re anything like me, ACNH is a comfort game that can be a respite on bad days, and it’s times like that where these words may be most beneficial.
Animal Crossing New Horizons: General Greeting Idea List
The Possibilities Are Vast
Animal Crossing greetings can be whatever a player wants them to be. They can range from funny to rude, or whatever will make you smile. Because it is a special interaction between the main character and that villager, this provides a wonderful opportunity to customize the dialogue to fit that villager, and even include names if desired. For example, if a player has the popular cat villager Raymond in New Horizons, he could say something like, “It’s [Name]! How purrfect!“

Users can play around with different combinations of ACNH greetings to see what feels right for each individual. Even after players set a greeting for a villager, as they continue to give attention to them, they will eventually ask about changing the greeting again, similar to catchphrases and nicknames. The player can decide to keep the current greeting or change things to add variety and fresh interactions.
This means if a player isn’t happy with the greeting they chose for an Animal Crossing: New Horizons villager, they will, in time, be able to revise it.
