Warning: There are spoilers ahead for Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord episodes 1 & 2.Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord introduces two Jedi who survived Order 66, and one of their species is a new addition to the franchise’s canon.
The new Order 66 survivors are Jedi Padawan Devon Izara (Gideon Adlon) and Jedi Master Eeko-Dio Daki (Dennis Haysbert). They are on the planet of Janix, which has not yet been touched by the Empire. The two characters have a fundamental disagreement about how they should proceed with their lives, with Devon being willing to steal and Master Daki insisting on sticking to his principles and that others will help them because they are in need. Their paths further diverge when Devon is arrested for stealing and then freed from prison by Maul (Sam Witwer).
In Star Wars‘ official behind-the-scenes breakdown of the episode, it is revealed that Master Daki belongs to a new species called the Mosyk, who have never appeared in the franchise before. During development of the animated series, he was nicknamed “Dino Jedi” before his character or his species were officially named.
With the Mosyk now established in the Star Wars canon via Master Daki, other members of the species have the potential to appear in Maul – Shadow Lord or other future television series, films, novels, comics, short stories, or video games. Each time a new alien species is introduced, it paves the way for them to become more prominent. Devon’s species, the Twi’leks, is a perfect example of this, as they were introduced in 1983’s Return of the Jedi (though not by name) through Bib Fortuna and Oola at Jabbat the Hutt’s Palace. Since then, Twi’leks have only taken on a bigger role, from Devon to the pivotal Star Wars Rebels and Ahsoka character Hera Syndulla.
While the Mosyk being new to Star Wars is likely going to be more of a fun trivia fact as opposed to being essential to the story of Maul – Shadow Lord, Master Daki still has an important role to play. He is trying to get Devon back from Maul and using the Force to help any in need along the way, including when he used the Force to save those endangered by the collapsing bridge on Janix. Master Daki is still trying to instill traditional Jedi values in Devon while Maul attempts to seduce her to the dark side of the Force.
Between Maul being the show’s protagonist, his determination to make Devon his apprentice, and the trailers confirming that Inquisitors will eventually come to Janix, Master Daki’s future looks grim. At the same time, the series has already been renewed for season 2, and he may factor into where the story is headed further down the line, especially if Devon ends up rejecting Maul and wants to return to her Jedi roots.
Beyond Maul, Devon, and Master Daki, other key Maul – Shadow Lord characters include Brander Lawson (Wagner Moura), Two-Boots (Richard Ayoade), Rook Kast (Vanessa Marshall), Spybot (David W. Collins), Looti Vario (Chris Diamantopoulos), Rylee Lawson (Charlie Bushnell), Chief Klyce (Keiko Agena), and Rheena-Sul (Pamela Adlon).
