The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’s Princess Peach Twist Is Older Than You Think

[

Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie

The new Super Mario Galaxy Movie is a fast-paced and exciting expansion of Nintendo’s growing cinematic universe. As such, it’s also rewritten some key character origins with a major lore twist for Princess Peach. Voiced by Anya Taylor-Joy, Princess Peach has been one of the Nintendo movie franchise’s more dynamic and compelling characters, an idea made even truer thanks to The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

Without a doubt, one of the movie’s biggest surprises is the brand-new connection between Princess Peach and Princess Rosalina (Brie Larson). In the final act of the new Super Mario sequel, it’s revealed that the two princesses are actually long-lost sisters who were separated long ago. As such, it’s a pretty major shift from what we know from the original games.

However, it’s worth pointing out that this new Princess Peach/Rosalina twist isn’t entirely new. Instead, it actually draws from ideas dating back to the original Super Mario Galaxy game released back in 2007.

In the new Super Mario Galaxy Movie, it’s revealed that Peach and Rosalina are sisters who were separated when mysterious dark forces attacked their home in the cosmos.

To protect her younger sister, Rosalina was forced to send Peach to the Mushroom Kingdom, where she was cared for by the Toads until she grew old enough to protect and care for them. As seen at the end of the Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Peach and Rosalina can access impressive cosmic star power when they’re together, as shown when they completely transform Planet Bowser in the movie’s third act.

How well do you know your cinema classics?

By all accounts, this new sister reveal for Peach and Rosalina is a pretty big deviation from what’s been established in the original Nintendo games. However, it’s actually based on original ideas for the Super Mario Galaxy game. Per the Super Mario Galaxy PRIMA Official Game Guide, Peach and Rosalina being revealed as relatives was indeed considered during the 2007 game’s development, explaining their similar features and visual design even though the developers ultimately went in another direction.

As such, it’s pretty cool that Nintendo has effectively revived a forgotten concept rather than simply changing Peach and Rosalina’s origins on a whim. After all, it arguably provides more emotional depth for both Peach and Rosalina’s current arcs, while also creating some exciting potential in future movies.

How Princess Peach’s New Super Mario Galaxy Connection Rewrites Rosalina’s Backstory

Admittedly, Peach and Rosalina’s new sister connection does rewrite the backstory given to Rosalina in the original Super Mario Galaxy game. In the original 2007 game, Princess Rosalina’s past is told through her storybook with nine different chapters, confirming that she once had parents and a younger brother before she ended up among the stars and caring for the Lumas aboard the Comet Observatory.

Across its nine chapters, Rosalina’s origin is full of depth and is actually quite tragic. While nothing explicitly says Rosalina’s parents and brother couldn’t also be Peach’s, it seems more likely that that original backstory is simply being ignored in favor of this new sister reveal.

While the change from the original game lore may be divisive for some, there’s no denying that the twist does offer some exciting narrative potential going forward with future movies. Not only do Peach and Rosalina now have family beyond those they care for, but they could also face those “dark forces” together in a future Super Mario movie, whoever or whatever they may be. All in all, it does feel pretty cool that the new Princess Peach twist comes from original Super Mario Galaxy game ideas.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is now in theaters from Illumination and Nintendo.
