‘Invincible’ Season 4 Episode 6 Recap: Prime Video’s Superhero Series Gives Fans a Breather as the War Heats Up

Editor’s note: The below recap contains spoilers for Invincible Season 4 Episode 6.

Last week’s episode of Invincible was brutal. That’s par for the course with Robert Kirkman‘s violent animated superhero series, but “Give Us a Moment” was even more shocking than usual. Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun) and his brother Oliver (Christian Convery) have left Earth to join their father Nolan (J.K. Simmons), Allen (Seth Rogen), Telia (Tatiana Maslany), and Thaedus (Peter Cullen) in the Coalition of Planets as they prepare for their war against the Viltrum Empire. Another Earth-based hero, Tech Jacket (Zoey Deutch), has also joined in the fight, now bonding with both Allen and Oliver.

The episode reached a startling conclusion, which saw the long-teased rematch between Conquest (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and Mark. While Mark was finally able to kill the bloodthirsty Viltrumite once and for all, he is now near death himself. Now that Telia has received orders to leave them behind, Nolan, Oliver, and the gravely injured Mark are stranded on a deserted alien planet. Episode 6, titled “You Look Horrible,” picks up the pieces of the game-changing battle as the Viltrumite War truly begins.

Nolan and Oliver Try To Nurse Mark Back to Health in ‘Invincible’ Season 4 Episode 6

Episode 6 begins with Thaedus briefing the Coalition of Planets on the Viltrumites’ attack, telling them that now is the time to strike, as the Empire has never been weaker. Parallel to that conversation is Thragg (Lee Pace) giving a speech to an army of Viltrumites, telling them that they will overcome any potential weaknesses the Coalition throws at them. In private, Thragg promises the skull of Emperor Argall that he will not fail him.

Still stranded on the desert planet, Oliver is angered when he sees Nolan giving Conquest a memorial, telling him, “People at home hate him almost as much as they hate you.” Nolan then inspects Mark’s body and notes that they will need to stay on the planet until Mark gets better. Oliver stresses that this could take months, but Nolan insists that this is their only option. Back in space, Allen and Tech Jacket are still hiding underneath the Viltrum warship, and overhear a call between Thragg and two soldiers, instructing them to head to Talescria. This could give Allen and Tech Jacket the chance to finally escape and get back with the Coalition.

Nolan hunts creatures on the deserted planet in order to find food for him, Oliver, and Mark. Oliver refuses to eat and is more focused on getting Mark back to health. Nolan says that he must train Oliver for the Viltrumite War, but Oliver refuses again. He also reveals that he overheard Nolan’s conversation with Debbie (Sandra Oh), where he called his relationship with Oliver’s mother, Andressa (Rhea Seehorn), a mistake. Nolan tells Oliver that he has every right to be angry and that he hasn’t been a father to him.

Having now reached Talescria, Allen and Tech Jacket attempt their escape but are caught. As they fight, Space Racer (Winston Duke) flies in and rescues them. They flee back to the Coalition base on Talescria. Oliver has finally begun to slowly warm up to Nolan again, even accepting food from him, but the moment doesn’t last when Nolan brings up Andressa. Nolan notices that Mark isn’t healing properly and needs more protein, so Nolan fetches eggs from a nearby creature’s nest. The creature storms the camp, and the two work together to fight it off. As Nolan is about to kill the creature, Oliver stops him, telling him that they won’t be able to get more eggs if they kill it.

As Allen and Tech Jacket reunite with Telia, Thaedus, and the Coalition, Battle Beast (Michael Dorn) finally makes his return, after having been found by the Coalition. Allen and Tech Jacket tell them that Mark is still injured, and they are unsure when he, Nolan, and Oliver will arrive. Telia says that Viltrum forces are strengthening, but Allen remains optimistic about their chances. As Nolan feeds Mark, Oliver asks him, “If mom meant nothing to you, then why did you have me?” Nolan says that he didn’t truly mean that Andressa meant nothing to him; he just didn’t want to hurt Debbie more than he already had. To him, the real mistake was going to Thraxxa, but neither Oliver nor Andressa were “mistakes.” Oliver finally agrees to let Nolan train him, seeing that his father truly is attempting to change.

Meanwhile, the Coalition sends in Battle Beast, Space Racer, Allen, and Tech Jacket to attack Viltrum outposts, making progress in their fight. As Nolan tells Oliver that he is beginning to feel hopeful about the war, they overhear Mark talking in his sleep. Nolan tells Oliver that Mark will make his full recovery “any day now.” Oliver says that while he is ready to leave, he truly is going to miss the time he spent finally bonding with Nolan.

‘Invincible’ Drops Surprise New Project This Week

Season 4 is currently airing on Prime Video.

Kregg (Clancy Brown) informs Thragg about the Coalition of Planets’ rising power, leaving the latter dumbfounded. They need a new strategy. While being trained, Oliver opens up further to Nolan, saying that he doesn’t call Earth his true home and feels as though he will never fit in. Upon returning to their camp, they notice that Mark is gone. They find him at the Conquest death site, where Nolan tells Mark that they are all OK, and that he has been unconscious for nearly two months after killing Conquest.

There’s a Mole in the Coalition in ‘Invincible’ Season 4 Episode 6

Thaedus tells the Coalition that they are currently winning the war, but nobody seems to buy it, especially with how many lives they have lost along the way. As Thaedus says, “I promise you this is the only way. We must finish what we started,” a Viltrumite gunship makes its way into the city, blowing up their base of operations. Thragg arrives alongside Kregg, Anissa (Shantel VanSanten), and several others, and begins attacking, with Thragg ordering them to leave nobody alive. As Allen, Thaedus, and Tech Jacket fight off the Viltrumites, Mark, Nolan, and Oliver make their arrival. As Mark and Oliver attack the gunship, Thragg’s forces retreat.

As the damaged gunship begins crashing down onto the city, Mark, Nolan, Oliver, Allen, Tech Jacket, and Thaedus stop it, pushing the remains back into space. With the city ravaged, Allen is angered when Thaedus calls the attack “only a minor setback.” As they argue, Telia reveals that somebody within their ranks disabled their defenses, believing a mole was responsible. The mole turns out to be one of the Data Twins (Jay Pharoah, Fred Tatasciore), with the other shooting the betrayer. As he dies, the mole reveals that he has been betraying the Coalition for years, only because he didn’t want to die. With Thragg and his forces returning to Viltrum to plan another attack, Thaedus tells the team that they need to go to Viltrum. A post-credits scene confirms that Conquest is indeed dead, and he’s not coming back this time.

While not without some action-packed battles and some hefty moments, this week’s episode of Invincible gives viewers some time to breathe after everything that happened last week before laying it all out for a big, bombastic battle at the end. Oliver and Nolan’s bond being healed gave us some sweet moments, especially as we see Nolan finally being able to find ways to stay true to his new promises to his sons. The mole reveal at the end feels a bit rushed, but it will likely play a larger role in the final two episodes of Season 4.
