Although Thor has lost and recovered Mjolnir multiple times, this time his reliable hammer is gone for good. Few comic book characters are so closely associated with a weapon as Thor is with his hammer. Thor possesses an immense amount of power within himself, but he channels it through his weapon, which is often enhanced with special enchantments that complement the God of Thunder’s divine strength.
Thor’s journey essentially culminates in Al Ewing’s The Immortal Thor, which celebrates the hero’s history and brings his story to a seemingly definitive end with a tragedy worthy of a mythical god. But as the god dies and his hammer goes with him, a new hero is born, and the perpetual cycle of death and rebirth continues in The Mortal Thor, in line with the idea of Ragnarok.
Sigurd Jarlsson, Thor reincarnated, is instinctively drawn to an earthly hammer. However, no hammer in this world is as durable as the legendary Mjolnir.
Sigurd Jarlsson’s Hammer Is Destroyed And Replaced With A New Mortal Weapon
The Mortal Thor #9; Written by Al Ewing; Art by Pasqual Ferry & Matt Milla
Sigurd Jarlsson is a hunted man, and his human life reaches a turning point when Roxxon sends the Radioactive Man to give him an ultimatum. Radioactive Man calmly warns Sigurd, but he makes it clear that Roxxon isn’t playing around by completely melting Sigurd’s hammer and destroying the door of his apartment. Sigurd’s earthly hammer has no powers, but Sigurd enhanced it and turned it into a mortal weapon with a bungee cord and his sheer strength.
Luckily for Sigurd Jarlsson, his boss and friend Jenny Sapristi replaces his hammer with an improved version, which he soon upgrades with a bungee cord. This new, black hammer looks less like Thor’s traditional Mjolnir from Marvel Comics and more like an ancient, godly weapon from Norse myth. Sigurd then proves that his might doesn’t depend on a specific weapon by defeating the Radioactive Man with his new hammer, a hazmat suit, and his strategic thinking, burying Chen Lu in an abandoned factory.
Thor Tends To Get A Boost Every Time He Changes Weapons
Thor’s Might Is Tested When He Loses His Weapon Of Choice
Long before he’s deemed worthy, a young and brash Thor wields Jarnbjorn, a massive battle axe forged by dwarves. While it lacks Mjolnir’s flight and weather manipulation, Jarnbjorn is a blood-blessed weapon capable of cutting through the hide of Celestials. When he later becomes the Unworthy Thor, returning to this axe forces him to rely on his natural Asgardian brawn and tactical cunning. Thor’s Unworthy era pushes him into a grittier, more vulnerable character arc where he learns that being a god isn’t about the weapon he uses, but the will behind the strike.
Thor’s New Hammer Is Now Mjolnir’s Most Powerful Version Yet
Marvel’s new multiversal Thor variant wields a version of Mjolnir capable of granting its wielder the abilities of two invincible powerhouses.
The dramatic volatility in Thor’s power is most evident when he taps into weapons of cosmic or dark origins. During his final stand against Galactus, an elderly King Thor famously wields All-Black the Necrosword. All-Black allows Thor to slay cosmic entities, but at the cost of his own moral purity. Conversely, as the All-Father, Thor sets aside Mjolnir to wield Gungnir, his father’s spear, which serves as a focus for the Thor-Force. In these moments, Thor ceases to be a mere brawler and becomes a reality-warping architect, capable of rebuilding worlds or commanding the very stars.
Perhaps the most poignant weapon transitions occur when Thor is at his physical lowest. Similarly to The Unworthy Thor, the God of Thunder’s Mortal Thor era makes it so he can’t rely on the auto-pilot of Mjolnir’s enchantments. As the human being Sigurd Jarlsson, Thor has to master every swing and every ounce of his natural durability. Arcs like these inevitably conclude with Thor regaining his divine status, but he returns as a significantly more dangerous combatant because he has survived the fires of vulnerability.
