Netflix’s New 8-Part Crime Show Debuts To Rare Rotten Tomatoes Score

Big Mistakes, Netflix’s new crime comedy, has debuted to a rare score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Led by Dan Levy (Schitt‘s Creek), who co-created the series with Bottoms and I Love LA star Rachel Sennott, the eight-episode family saga is the latest offering in streaming television’s most dominant genre. Whether lightly comedic or darkly serious, most new shows have an element of crime to them. Early reviews suggest that Levy and Sennott have successfully incorporated that crime element.

Big Mistakes has started off with a flawless 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The score is currently based on only six reviews, so the final score may change once more reviews are added in the coming weeks.

What To Know About Big Mistakes

The crime-comedy show debuted on April 9, centering on two siblings who are well over their heads. In particular, Big Mistakes spotlights Nicky (Levy) and Morgan (Taylor Ortega). The sibling pair embarks on a theft for their dying grandmother. But that pulls them into a world of organized crime. They are blackmailed into dangerous assignments, but somehow find themselves failing upwards.

Sitcom veteran Laurie Metcalf co-stars in Big Mistakes, appearing alongside Abby Quinn, Boran Kuzum, Darren Goldstein, Elizabeth Perkins, Ilia Volok, Jack Innanen, Jacob Gutierrez, Joe Barbara, and Mark Ivanir. The project marks the first series as part of Levy’s overall television deal with Netflix. It also marks a relatively rare foray back into television after the 2020 ending of Schitt’s Creek.

In ScreenRant‘s review of Big Mistakes, Dani Kessel Odom writes that the Netflix Original is “messy and uneven,” reflecting on how the show feels like three different shows that are smashed together. But it’s noted that the great cast does a lot to help with the weak points in the script.

In a more positive review for Collider, Samantha Cooley writes that Big Mistakes is a fast-paced crime thriller that’s “action-packed” and “suspenseful.” While it may seem different for fans who enjoyed Schitt‘s Creek, both shows ultimately unite in the fact that they feature great performances. That is echoed in Brian Tallerico’s review of RogerEbert.com, who finds that the show gets better as it goes along.

The ending of Big Mistakes leaves the door open for a continuation. But that will depend more on viewership and whether there’s an audience to match up with the show’s early positive reception, which states that, despite some jitters, the new Netflix show does have potential.

All episodes of Big Mistakes are on Netflix.
