After 32 years, an iconic Justice League villain has officially redeemed himself and chosen the path of hero over villain. In addition to this major shift for the character, he has also chosen to follow Aquaman, swearing fealty to the newly crowned Emperor of the Sea.
It isn’t every day that DC Comics pulls a complete one-eighty on one of its most iconic villains and puts them on the path to becoming a hero. Yet that is exactly what has happened in EmperorAquaman#16 by Jeremy Adams, John Timms, and Rex Lokus, with King Shark not only denouncing his villainy but also swearing his loyalty to Arthur Curry.
This may seem out of the blue for DC fans who haven’t been following the publisher’s ongoing titles, but the explanation for King Shark’s change of heart isn’t only satisfactory but also wildly intriguing, promising more to come.
King Shark Swears Loyalty to Aquaman, But Can Arthur Trust Him?

Emperor Aquaman #16 sees King Shark barging into Arthur’s throne room, demanding that he speak with the hero. At first glance, this initially seems like an attack, given that King Shark has taken out Aquaman’s guards to see him. However, expectations are quickly subverted when Nanaue explains his reason for demanding an audience with Arthur.
King Shark opens by saying, “I know you have seen, as we all have seen, visions of the future. Mine says you are the one that can save us all… and I will be damned if anyone stops you from doing that.” This statement is in reference to DC’s recently concluded crisis event, DC K.O., which was a death-match style tournament that pitted Earth-Prime’s heroes and villains against each other as they fought to acquire enough Omega Energy for one champion to take on and defeat Darkseid in his King Omega form.

At the end of the event, those who had competed and ultimately died returned to life after Superman, the tournament’s champion, won his battle against Darkseid. Those who had competed in the tournament experienced individual visions of what they must do to prepare for Darkseid’s eventual return. Hence, King Shark is referring to the vision he personally received.
Jason Momoa’s Aquaman defined the hero’s look for an entire generation, and that influence lives on with the reveal of DC’s new Aquaman.
King Shark then goes on to say, “I am here to swear fealty to you, Emperor Aquaman, if you would give me but a chance to prove myself.” While the full details of King Shark’s vision aren’t revealed, it’s clear that he believes Aquaman is essential to saving Earth and, as such, has made it his duty to help Aquaman in any way that he can.

Disciplined, relentless, and driven by a grief that never fully heals. You’ve built yourself into something formidable not through luck or cosmic accident, but through sheer, grinding will. You plan further ahead than anyone else in the room and trust fewer of them. The darkness you carry isn’t weakness — it’s your greatest weapon, and your most dangerous blind spot. But beneath the armor, you still believe in justice. That belief is what separates you from the monsters you fight.
Powerful beyond measure, yet defined by your humility. You were raised to believe that the measure of a person is what they do with what they’re given — and you’ve taken that lesson to heart. The world looks to you as a symbol, and the weight of that is something you carry quietly. You could impose your will on everything, and you choose not to. That choice, made every day, is the most heroic thing about you.
A warrior forged in honor, guided by truth. You came to this world not born into its compromises, and that perspective gives you a clarity that cuts through politics, spin, and fear. You fight hard, hold the line without flinching, and refuse to let injustice be normalized around you. People are sometimes surprised by your compassion — they expect the sword and forget the heart it serves. You are both, in perfect, formidable balance.
Quick, warm, and far more capable than your jokes let on. You use humor as a shield and velocity as a solution, but your greatest gift isn’t speed — it’s heart. You feel everything deeply and act faster than most people think. The people around you don’t always realize how much you carry, how much you process in the quiet between seconds. You make the impossible look easy, and you do it without making anyone feel small for being slower than you.
Chosen because your will is extraordinary. The ring didn’t create you — it recognized you. Your power is literally your imagination and your resolve, which means your ceiling is whatever you believe it to be. You can be reckless, and you can be arrogant, but your capacity for growth is equally limitless. You operate on a cosmic scale but never forget the small things worth protecting. In the universe’s darkest sectors, you are the light.
King Shark Officially Redeems Himself, Kicking Off His New Hero Era
Comic Pages Come from Jeremy Adams’ Emperor Aquaman #16 (2026) – Art by John Timms & Rex Lokus
While Aquaman’s closest friends and family warn him against accepting King Shark’s offer, the hero decides to give Nanaue a chance. Some readers may have also been skeptical of the authenticity of King Shark’s proclamation of fealty. However, the once-villain proves that his offer of loyalty is genuine by the end of the issue.
King Shark makes up part of the shiver (the official name for a grouping of sharks) that accompanies Aquaman on a mission to connect Atlantis to various kingdoms across the universe, an effort that Arthur knows will be crucial in winning the upcoming war against Darkseid. However, things go awry during the mission.
The hostile alien attack that takes place offers King Shark the perfect opportunity to double-cross Aquaman or, at the very least, abandon ship and save himself. Yet, King Shark stands his ground and fights in the name of Emperor Aquaman even when the odds are clearly against him. In this moment, King Shark not only redeems himself in the eyes of Aquaman but also launches his new era as a Justice League villain-turned-hero.
