The MCU Is Closer Than Ever To A Live-Action Into The Spider-Verse

Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for Daredevil: Born Again season 2, episode 5.

The popularity of Sony’s Into the Spider-Verse films has been overwhelming, and the MCU has never been closer to bringing these stories to live-action. Thanks to Daredevil: Born Again, an MCU series that is set within the same stomping ground as the legendary Web-Slinger, it feels as though the world that was introduced in the animated Spider-Verse movies could be just around the corner.

That being said, a lot is happening across the Multiverse Saga, and considering the tenuous relationship between Sony’s Spider-Man and his associated IPs and Marvel Studios’ efforts to bring these iconic heroes into the MCU, the reality of this kind of crossover feels more like a pipe dream than a legitimate development that the studios would actually move toward. That being said, Daredevil: Born Again certainly makes it feel like a possibility.

The MCU Has Never Been Closer To The Spider-Verse

While Spider-Man: No Way Home saw Tom Holland’s Peter Parker cross over with a couple of web-heads from across the multiverse, the film and the wider Multiverse Saga have steered clear of actually exploring the multiverse in any significant way, aside from singular entries like The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Despite this, Daredevil: Born Again creates some interesting parallels with the Spider-Verse movies.

The Spider-Verse films begin with a version of Wilson Fisk who has amassed incredible power and wealth, while also having lost everything that grounded him and encouraged him to exercise restraint. That is because the Wilson Fisk of those movies lost his wife, Vanessa, before the beginning of the films, and her tragic fate, along with that of their son, Richard, is revealed in a flashback where Fisk’s unlawful actions indirectly led to his wife’s death.

Now, as Wilson confronts the reality of his wife’s death in the MCU, it’s entirely possible that he could walk down a path that leads to something similar to what plays out in the Spider-Verse films. Not to mention, the Multiverse is already in full swing in the MCU, opening the door to interdimensional travel and more alternate versions of a hero like Spider-Man to appear.

Daredevil: Born Again Referenced Multiple Worlds

Daredevil: Born Again dropped some interesting dialogue in a conversation between Vanessa Fisk and her beloved husband, Wilson Fisk, aka the Kingpin. While discussing plans for the future, Vanessa asks how many worlds Wilson wishes to conquer. Unsurprisingly, Fisk’s ambitions guide his answer when he asks, “How many are there?”

While this line is shown in a very brief moment as Vanessa and Wilson have a private conversation, it’s interesting that Marvel would include it while the Multiverse Saga is well underway. Indeed, it’s not inconceivable that Fisk may learn about the multiverse, and he may even be recruited by a more powerful villain, such as Doctor Doom, ahead of the events of Battleworld, which is expected to be the focus of Avengers: Secret Wars.

While the legalities and copyright issues do seem to restrain what is possible for these characters in the MCU, the opportunity to take these stories and create a live-action version of the Spider-Verse has never been more possible than it is right now.

The MCU Still Needs To Introduce It’s Miles Morales

Of course, to do the story justice, the MCU would need to introduce its version of Miles Morales, and again, that seems like a step that may be a little out of reach at present. However, Marvel Studios did lay the groundwork for this to happen as far back as Spider-Man: Homecoming.

In that film, there is a scene where Peter Parker meets a man whose name is Aaron Davis, played by Donald Glover. Aaron is the paternal uncle of Miles Morales, and even in this brief cameo, he mentions his nephew, which confirms that Miles Morales likely already exists in the world of the MCU.

Despite this, the MCU has yet to introduce the character, establish how they acquire their spider-powers, and ultimately, it feels like the timeline around a character like this is uncertain. Regardless, it’s fun to see how close Daredevil: Born Again is getting to laying the foundation for a Spider-Verse-style story to play out in the MCU.
