Mel’s The Pitt season 3 future is addressed after the character’s shocking season 2 ending.
Created by R. Scott Gemmill, the procedural medical drama follows the medical staff of Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center’s ER, nicknamed “the Pitt,” with each episode covering an hour of the shift, as the characters face staff shortages, medical challenges, and personal setbacks. The Pitt season 2 ended with Mel being summoned for her deposition because she is being sued for malpractice following a pediatric measles case from season 1.
In an interview with ScreenRant’s Grant Hermanns, Taylor Dearden spoke about what Mel’s deposition could look like in season 3 and what her hopes are for the character moving forward. Check out the exchange below:
So, we end the season on Mel having to get called back into the deposition, a big deal this whole season, this poor thing cannot escape this day. What was sort of going through your head when you saw that that was going to happen? And then what can you tease about what that might progress into?
She spoke about her hopes for how Mel’s arc would unfold, and that she’d love to see the character outside of her comfort zone, and in a legal setting, and the fact that this would push her as a performer.
Can’t tease anything. We don’t know anything. I can say what I wish. What I wish and want, I’d love to see it. I’d love to do the deposition. I’d love to see Mel in an environment so foreign to her and aggressive, and there’s so much acting involved with legal stuff. It’s a big presentation. It’s a big show, and I can see Mel getting lost in it, and I would love the opportunity to have a deposition scene.
She went on to discuss the fact that she knows the deposition takes place in the hospital, but in a boardroom, and how this juxtaposes well with the dramatic scenes in the ER.
I know it all takes place in the hospital, but actually my character’s the only one that’s left so far, in both seasons. I guess Santos, now, has left too, but the first season I was the only one to have left, and the second season with the karaoke. [The deposition’s] also in the hospital, it’s in like a boardroom. So, I just also think dramatically it’d be great to have scenes in the ER, and then you’re in a wood-paneled room, and you’re kind of wondering which is causing [her] the most anxiety. I don’t know, I’m hopeful.
She closed by saying how much she was looking forward to having the scene in season 2, and how excited and hopeful she is from an acting perspective.
When I found out about the deposition for the second season, I was like, “Oh my God, I get to do a deposition scene.” And then I went, “Oh, I don’t. Oh, that’s so sad.” So I am, actor-y, very much hoping to have that. [Chuckles]
While season 2 might have ended on a more low-key, emotional note, the drama hanging over Mel remains as palpable as ever. It’s already known that season 3 will take place four months after, in November. Filming will start in June of this year.
There are also ramifications for The Pitt season 3 long-term, and how Mel might fit into that. The deposition will likely begin at the start of the season, and the real-time format means drama and tension can be built. It’s unlikely the deposition will last the entire season, so the question will be what becomes of Mel once the process is finished.
The Pitt‘s cast is headed up by Noah Wyle, who previously collaborated with Gemmill on the hit ’90s medical drama ER. Dearden, Tracy Ifeachor, Patrick Ball, Fiona Dourif, and Katherine LaNasa also star in the show, which has received critical acclaim for its real-time format and accurate portrayal of the American healthcare system in a post-pandemic world.
It will be great to see The Pitt and Dearden taking Mel out of her comfort zone in season 3, and this opens up plenty of avenues to explore with the character’s neurodivergence.
