Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Successor Release Date Has Gamers Braced For A Wait

[

The Legend of Zelda is 40 years old in 2026, and that’s a pretty landmark occasion for any video game franchise, whichever way you slice it. As part of that, fans have growing expectations that Nintendo could be preparing a raft of big announcements to mark the event, and those hopes might not be too far off base.

Noise around a potential Ocarina of Time remake for the Switch 2 has been growing, with other claims made by the same leaker recently proving true. We may also get some more news on the upcoming movie adaptation, but one area which is significantly more up in the air is a potential new game in the single-player series, and fans are preparing themselves for some tough times ahead.

The Next Mainline Zelda Game Could Be Years Away

Given how long it takes to develop games these days, we could be looking at a really long wait for a new Zelda game. Over on Reddit, one user asked the community if they would be happy to wait until 2030 for the next game in the series, and explained why they thought we could realistically be looking at a few years before we get to play it.

The fans who posted in response were actually remarkably sanguine, with one saying, “It was probably going to be 2028 at the earliest anyway. There’s been a 5-year gap between mainline 3D games since The Wind Waker and Zelda games are becoming bigger and more ambitious.”

“I’d be fine waiting 7 years if that’s what it takes, but I’m hoping for like 2029. I don’t want a game rushed out just because Nintendo has a new console. They should take the time to make it great, maybe put out some remakes or remasters during the wait,” another added.

“I’m expecting the next game around 2028, so 2030 would be a little longer than I’d like it but I’d get over it. It’s not like I’m not gonna get it whenever it comes out,” a third said.

An Ocarina Of Time Remake May Be Next

As mentioned earlier, things are looking pretty good for our chances of getting an Ocarina of Time remake, either this year or early in 2027. We could hear more about that potential future at the next Nintendo Direct (which will likely be in June), with the developer almost certain to host a Zelda Direct at some point this Summer.
