Bloodborne 60fps PS5 Gameplay Is Splitting Gamers

Few games seemed to capture the public imagination quite as universally as Bloodborne over the last couple of decades, with FromSoftware’s action RPG being held in a near-unparalleled esteem.

Despite enormous calls from the community for the game to return in some form, either with a direct sequel or a remake or remaster of the original for the current run of PlayStation consoles, the developer has resisted the temptation to deliver one, leaving us fans out in the cold.

Fortunately, there are some proactive people out there who have the technical nouse to get the game running on PlayStation 5, and at 60 FPS no less.

Bloodborne On PS5 At 60fps Is Possible

Over on Reddit, one player shared a detailed post explaining exactly how they got Bloodborne running at 60 FPS on their PS5 (sort of), after growing frustrated at the lack of an official patch or release that allowed them to do so.

Essentially, they run the PS5 signal via proprietary game capture software, which has built-in Lossless Scaling via the Frame Generation mode via Elgato devices. This generates intermediate frames where they would otherwise be missing to create a pseudo-60 FPS experience that looks fairly smooth overall.

Whilst it’s an interesting way of doing things, there are some obvious drawbacks, and it’s a long way from native 60 FPS, with the comments split over whether it was worth doing at all.

“That’s interesting, but I would honestly rather play at 30fps than simulated 60fps with LS. LS works great when the base frame rate is 60+ fps, but at a base of 30 there are just too many artifacts for me. The gaps between frames are too big for it to guess effectively,” one comment read.

“Lossless scaling is really good for turning like 52fps into a solid 60, or like 80fps into 90, but 30 into 60 means you’re getting half fake frames. That’s no bueno,” another added.

Others liked the execution, with one saying, “I do this too man. A lot of theory being thrown around but the reality feels and looks quite nice. The latency introduced is barely noticeable and certainly has not had a meaningful impact. Lossless scaling is great software.”

This Approach Isn’t For Everyone

For a variety of reasons, an approach like this obviously isn’t going to be the best way to play for everyone, not least because it requires an additional hardware purchase to make it work. Plus, Bloodborne is a great game in 30 FPS and we still haven’t given up hope on that re-release, so let’s keep everything crossed that FromSoftware does, eventually, deliver.
