With April more than halfway over, the summer is calling, and that means netizens are putting together their summer wishlists. While some will take time to travel this summer, you know others will take a break to try out some tempting new video games. If you are a big fan of life-sims such as Stardew Valley, you know just how much time these games can demand of you. And this summer, one recent release in particular is going to hook gamers as it blends the whimsy of Studio Ghibli with the satisfying gameplay of Stardew Valley.
Want to know what the game is? Well, the much-anticipated Steam title just went live this month to rave reviews. Seeds of Calamity is now available to play in Early Access, and the indie life-sim has everything fans could want. From a cozy overworld to its quaint magic and charm, Seeds of Calamity was well worth the wait.
“In a quiet wayside village you’d pass by in a classic JRPG – you and your fluffy Spellbook Companion tend your farm, help the community, and explore dungeons filled with challenge and treasure,” the game’s official description reads. “Twenty years after the Great Calamity, the land is finally recovering. As a young adventurer, you’ll leave the bustling capital to settle in a quiet village on the frontier. Here, you’ll build a cozy farm, help your neighbors, and uncover the small joys of life in a world healing from its past.”
Like any good life-sim, Seeds of Calamity is a truly meditative experience. The game is not only immersive with its writing and characters, but its cozy atmosphere is a joy to explore. Seeds of Calamity asks players to take things slow, both in-game and in their real lives, as it rewards the small treasures in life. As you help your avatar heal their village from a damning Calamity, Seeds of Calamity proves the best things in life come after strife, and you can only recover once your daily life slows down. These are the exact life lessons that made Studio Ghibli’s greatest films so impactful. From My Neighbor Totoro to Princess Mononoke, the anime studio is more invested in slice-of-life scenes rather than action. And while Seeds of Calamity has a great dungeon crawling system, the game is focused on Studio Ghibli’s signature kind of cozy magic.
2026 Is Already A Great Year For Life-Sim Fans
With the release of Seeds of Calamity hot off the press, gamers have no choice but to admit it: 2026 is a great year for life-sim releases. In the last month, two game-changing titles just dropped on fans, and they’re already changing the life-sim genre as we know it. Of course, they are Pokopia and Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream.
Blending Minecraft and Animal Crossing, Pokopia is a standout title for the Pokémon franchise as it marks the IP’s biggest foray into sims. As for Tomodachi Life, the Nintendo Switch 2 title is a blast from the past as the series last released a new game in 2013. After 13 long years, Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream is a massive expansion on the cheeky sim, creating a surreal experience for gamers that’s as absurd as it is satisfying.
