Warning: There are spoilers ahead for From season 4, episode 1, “Arrival.”The actor playing From‘s new villain reveals how the show’s original monsters impacted their performance.
From season 3’s ending introduces the ruthless Man in Yellow (Douglas E. Hughes), a villain who rips out Jim Matthews’ (Eion Bailey) throat. This is only the beginning of the Man in Yellow bringing more death and destruction to the residents’ lives, as the end of the season 4 premiere reveals that he has taken on the form of a pastor’s daughter and newcomer to the Township named Sophia (Julia Doyle).
In an interview with ScreenRant‘s Tatiana Hullender for From season 4, Doyle was asked about whether the portrayal of the Township’s nocturnal monsters influenced her performance, especially since the Man in Yellow is clearly different and more powerful than them. Doyle explained that while they had a small effect on her performance, she did not want to replicate them, as she strove to make the Man in Yellow feel like an authentic villain instead of a caricature or evil “cliché.” Check out her comments below:
They definitely informed my performance in a way, but I didn’t want to base my performance off them or put too much energy into watching other people. Sometimes, that becomes a caricature rather than an actual lived-in, inhabited person.
I don’t ever want to be a cliché version of an evil character. Sometimes I feel like I’ve referred back to characters in the past, where I’m like, “Maybe I should bring some of this character in it,” then all of a sudden you bring all those characters together, and it’s the most basic version of that character ever.
Doyle acting differently from the monsters not only distinguishes her from them, but also helps the residents be less suspicious of her. To them, Sophia is a naive and deeply religious pastor’s daughter, and so far has given them no reason to suspect that she is anything else. Between arriving to Town in a car with the pastor (Rhys Bevan-John), being terrified after the crash, and praying with Kenny Liu (Ricky He), her deception has been well-played.
While there is still a great deal of mystery surrounding the monsters and the Man in Yellow, there are already several notable differences, which makes it all the more important for Doyle’s portrayal to be distinct from them. One of these differences is that the Man in Yellow has no problem being outside during the day, as seen when killing Jim in season 3 and when seemingly coming to the Township as Sophia in season 4. Meanwhile, the monsters can only come out at night and have to stay in the caves when the sun is out.
Another important difference is that the Man in Yellow can completely transform his body and voice into someone else. The monsters have only ever been shown to alternate between their flesh-eating and smiling human forms. Beyond this transformation and eating their prey, they don’t have much in the way of powers, while the Man in Yellow can convincingly become someone else and can cause a seizure or wake someone up just by touching them. Based on his last words to Jim in the season 3 finale, he was also the voice on the radio in season 1.

As a new series regular in From‘s cast, Doyle is set to continue having a prominent role moving forward. Before suffocating the pastor, the Man in Yellow says his favorite part is the residents tearing one another apart. He is poised to make this happen by staying disguised as Sophia and subtly manipulating his neighbors, which is more sophisticated than the monsters’ nightly appearances.
