Half-Life 3 believers don’t give up easily, and Steam has just given them another reason to believe it could be coming soon. Following persistent rumors that the long-awaited sequel may finally be on the horizons, fans have started to expect that Half-Life 3 will release alongside the Steam Machine to help incentivize sales of the new hardware.
This introduces another hang-up, though, as the Steam Machine also lacks a clear release date. Fortunately, a new Steam update from this week could signal that Valve will finally give fans that long-awaited info soon. To no one’s surprise, Half-Life acolytes are running with it.
What Does This New Steam Leak Mean For Half-Life 3?
Steam has now added an app ID for “steam_controller_unboxing_2026”, as reported by Gabe Follower on X. The ID, which represents a video, can now be added to Steam libraries, but the video itself is not yet accessible.
This addition suggests that Valve could be providing an update on the new Steam Controller soon, which would likely come alongside new information on the Steam Machine. Taking things one step further, in traditional Half-Life 3 conspiracy theorist fashion, this might also mean Half-Life 3 news could be near. It’s all a bit tenuous, but that’s never stopped the faithful before.
The Steam Machine Is Definitely Getting Closer
X user Chaos is taking full advantage of the news to get the hype train going, posting an image of Gordon Freeman lifting a massive sphere of hope (and a Half-Life 3 logo) above his head in Dragon Ball fashion. Liquidoon takes a similar approach, sharing a video montage of Half-Life iconography, leaks, and community conspiracies overlaid with a dictionary definition of the word hope.
For a long time, believing in Half-Life 3 felt like a fool’s errand, but there’s been enough noise in the past couple of years to actually get serious about the prospect again. While speculation surrounding an autumn reveal or The Game Awards debut last year never panned out, the community is always willing to seize a new opportunity for a reveal date, and Valve previously used Half-Life to move hardware with the VR title Half-Life Alyx.
With the Steam Machine right around the corner, hope has rarely been higher. At any rate, Valve has confirmed that the Steam Machine will be releasing in a 2026 window. Even if Half-Life 3 doesn’t arrive at the same time, Steam fans can still look forward to the new hardware, assuming that RAM prices don’t completely kill its potential value.
