What Happens To Debbie And Nolan In Invincible?

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Invincible season 4 and the comics.Prime Video’s Invincible thrives on its exploration of relationships, and none is as emotionally complex as the marriage between Debbie (Sandra Oh) and Nolan (J.K. Simmons). In the show’s first season, Debbie and Nolan had a picture-perfect marriage filled with adventures and flying off to different countries on a whim. However, it all came crashing down when Nolan beat Mark to a pulp and killed thousands of people.

Following the disintegration of their marriage, Nolan flew off to Thraxa, where he found a new partner, a few months after his mission as a Viltrumite conqueror was revealed. Debbie, who was left on Earth to deal with the aftermath of Nolan’s betrayal, was understandably shattered and angry. Invincible held off Debbie and Nolan’s highly anticipated reunion until its fourth season, and let’s just say, it was worth the wait.

When Nolan returned to Debbie with a feeble apology, she was rightly furious and didn’t take the time to hear him out, raising the question of whether she will ever forgive him and if a reunion between them is possible. Thankfully, the Invincible comics provide an answer regarding the fate of their relationship. It takes Debbie quite a while to forgive Nolan for what he did to their son and the thousands of lives he took.

Eventually, she does forgive her ex-husband after he proves to her that he truly has changed and has left his life as a conqueror behind. The comics made sure to show that Debbie and Nolan’s way back to each other was not easy. He broke her trust and killed her people, so it would take more than apologizing to repair that kind of rift. Their reunion in the comics is more swift than it is in the Prime Video superhero series, because they get back together when Nolan returns to Earth after the Viltrumite War.

Even though the couple rekindles their romance, it takes time for Debbie to fully believe that Nolan is a changed man. There are, after all, some choices that he made that cannot be easily overlooked. Debbie and Nolan’s path in the Invincible comics is clear, but that’s not to say it will be the same in the Amazon series, which might cut out their reunion.

Nolan And Debbie’s Relationship Is One Of The Best Parts Of Invincible

At the end of Invincible season 4, Debbie flies off with Nolan to Talescria to visit Oliver (Christian Convery), who was still unconscious after the brutal fight with the Viltrumites. While this might signal a change in their relationship, especially because the two seemed okay as they watched Earth disappear when they flew off into space, they are still a long way from returning to who they were as a couple.

The Invincible TV adaptation has made some changes to the comics, including how Debbie blamed Mark for his father’s departure. So, there might be a chance that the Graysons will not reunite as depicted in the original story. If this were to happen, the creators of the series could face some backlash because they would be altering something that is a core part of Debbie’s character arc.

The Prime Video series fleshed out Debbie and made her a character that people understood and rooted for. For better or worse, her story with Nolan is crucial to who she is. The show has emphasized the power of forgiveness and redemption, something which Debbie herself believes in, as Nolan reminded her. Still, her ex-husband did kill a lot of people and seemingly got away with it.

While he saw the errors of his ways and resorted to making amends, his actions are still pretty difficult to forget. However, there is no denying that Nolan and Debbie were great together. Even when she was with Paul, it was pretty clear that she was still in love with Nolan.

Whichever way Invincible proceeds with Debbie and Nolan, controversy should be expected. On one hand, their reunion will signal that the show takes its message of second chances seriously, while on the other hand, Debbie will come off as a hypocrite for getting back with a mass murderer.
