Following memorable lead performances in the likes of The Whale and Rental Family, with the former earning the star a Best Actor prize from the Academy, the long-awaited return of everyone’s favorite Brendan Fraser is going from strength to strength. Recently, the announcement everyone had been waiting for marked the peak so far of what fans are lovingly dubbing the “Brennaissance,” as it was confirmed that Fraser would be reprising his role as Rick O’Connell in a new installment of the cult classicThe Mummy franchise.
Fraser won’t be alone in his return, as it has also been confirmed that Rachel Weisz and John Hannah will reprise their roles as Evelyn and Jonathan Carnahan. The trio will perform under the watchful directorial eyes of Radio Silence duo Tyler Gillettand Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, who recently directed the bloody horror sequel Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, starring Samara Weaving. Scheduled for a May 19, 2028, release date, the film will serve as a sequel to 2001’s The Mummy Returns, and promises to be one of the biggest movies in the first half of 2028.
Ahead of this next installment, the film from the franchise cast aside by those in charge, seemingly destined to be forgotten forever, has clawed its way to relevance. The film in question is The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, released in 2008, which controversially replaced the popular Weisz with Maria Bello.Tomb of the Dragon Emperor scored terrible reviews from critics, earning just 13% on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, although its $405 million box office haul was one of the largest in the summer of 2008. 18 years later, and thanks to the recent sequel news, Tomb of the Dragon Emperor is back in the streaming charts, officially placing as one of the ten most-streamed movies on HBO Max in the U.S.

‘The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor’ Is Officially Not Canon
Because of its change in cast and terrible reviews, many were wondering whether Gillett and Bettinelli-Olpin would ignore Tomb of the Dragon Emperor when making this next installment. In a March interview, the duo indeed confirmed this, with Bettinelli-Olpin answering when prompted by saying, “Well, Rachel is in this one.” Gillett added, “That should answer the question for you.” Exactly what will happen in the sequel remains to be seen, but worry not if you don’t add Tomb of the Dragon Emperor to your rewatch.
