Taylor Sheridan has become one of the biggest names in Western storytelling, and one of his projects is on the brink of leaving Netflix. The writer/director/producer is best known for creating the incredibly popular Yellowstone series for Paramount+, which he’s rapidly expanded into a fully fledged universe over the last several years.
Thanks to Yellowstone, 1883, 1923, Marshals, and The Madison, Sheridan has become synonymous with making neo-Westerns. The strength of those shows speaks volumes to just how much of a master he’s become in this genre. But while all those stories exist as shows on Paramount+, the creative has not been entirely limited to that medium and location.
Before hitting it big with all his TV shows, Sheridan received high praise for his work as a screenwriter on multiple movies, some of which he even directed. This included helping build the Sicario franchise and working with major stars to build his American Frontier trilogy.
One of those titles is Hell or High Water, a neo-Western crime thriller that Sheridan wrote but did not direct. When it came out in 2016, it wasn’t a substantial box office hit, but it did earn nearly universal acclaim, 97% with critics on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s developed a cult-classic reputation since then, but your chance to watch it on streaming is running out.
Hell Or High Water Leaves Netflix On May 1
Released in theaters by Lionsgate in August 2016, Hell or High Water has been available to stream on Netflix in the United States for most of 2026. However, the streamer has confirmed that Sheridan’s Western is among the titles slated to leave the service at the start of next month. Hell or High Water is officially set to be removed from Netflix on May 1, 2026.
The movie finishes its current Netflix run after being available to subscribers for three months. There’s currently no known next streaming home for it, making this next week potentially the last chance anyone will have to stream Hell or High Water for a while.
Written by Sheridan, Hell or High Water is directed by David Mackenzie. It stars Chris Pine and Ben Foster as brothers who turn to robbing banks to save their family’s ranch. The conflict comes as two Texas Rangers, played by Jeff Bridges and Gil Birmingham, investigate their robberies and close in on their unlawful ways.
Hell or High Water reviews emphatically praised the movie upon its release. Despite that, the movie only had a $37 million box office haul, which was still good enough for Lionsgate after the lower $12 million budget. Its availability on streaming services, like Netflix, over the last nearly 10 years has helped raise awareness for it.
Why Hell Or High Water Is Worth Watching Before It Leaves Netflix
If you’ve never seen Hell or High Water, it’s time to change that before it leaves Netflix. The movie is a great display of Sheridan’s ability to craft fully developed characters, complex stories, and more as a writer. The strength of his screenplay is so grand that he even received an Oscar nomination for it, which marked the first of his career.
The brilliant script could have floundered under improper direction, but Mackenzie doesn’t miss the mark on that front. He delivers a thrilling, character-focused movie with tense heists, brutal violence, and strong pacing. His handle on the material and everything that comes to life on the screen, from the performances to the cinematography, elevates the movie, which also received a Best Picture nomination.
As technically superb as Hell or High Water is, the movie is only able to reach its full potential thanks to the nuanced performances at the center. Pine has arguably never been better than he is here with a quieter role, while Foster gets the louder part and is equally good. Bridges is exceptional as one of the hunters, making his Academy Award nomination more than earned, as is Birmingham. Meanwhile, Marin Ireland, Katy Mixon, and Dale Dickey add to the ensemble’s strength; Prey‘s Amber Midthunder even plays a small part.
Whether you’re a fan of Sheridan’s movies and shows, the Western genre as a whole, crime-thrillers, heist movies, any of the stars, or just want to watch an excellent film, Hell or High Water is one to check out. So don’t forget to do so before it leaves Netflix in the next few days.
