Final Fantasy 14 Switch 2 Officially Dated, But There’s A Catch

This article covers a developing story. Continue to check back with us as we will be adding more information as it becomes available.

Final Fantasy 14 is officially heading to Switch 2. Square Enix CEO Takashi Kiryu joined the game’s producer Naoki “Yoshi P” Yoshida on stage during the USA leg of the Fan Fest event, where the studio announced the brand-new expansion Evercold, among a ton of other changes coming to FF14.

All told it was a pretty packed Fan Fest opening keynote, running over two hours long in the Anaheim Convention Center. But of course, Square Enix saved a final “one last thing” at the end of the keynote, and announced a Switch 2 version of the game; which will be joining the PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S editions later this year.

While the Switch 2 edition will arrive soon, there is a catch. While you have some time to plan on it and work around it, it could end up being a dealbreaker for some fans.

Final Fantasy 14 Hits Switch 2 In August

Switch 2 Info

According to Yoshi P and Kiryu, Final Fantasy 14 will finally arrive on Switch 2 this August. Before that happens, the company is planning on running a testing period (similar to the Xbox rollout), which Square Enix is once again calling “Early Access.”

It’ll last roughly one month, and “no subscription fees will be collected” during this free testing period. After that however, everything changes.

Switch 2 Users Need A Separate Subscription

So here’s the catch. Square Enix announced that Nintendo FF14 users will need an additional subscription plan. While Nintendo Switch Online will not be required to play FF14 on Switch 2, you will, due to the agreement between Square Enix and Nintendo, pick up a second subscription.

In other words, if you play FF14 on PC, PS5, or Xbox Series X, and want to play on Switch 2, you need to get a subscription beyond the former ecosystems. Square Enix has come out and said that there will be a 50% discount for this process, but it’s still a hurdle to cross.

If you’re a Final Fantasy 14 fan and want to play exclusively on Switch 2, you won’t have very many issues. You can just pick up the game during the preview period shortly before the August rollout, and be on your way. For everyone else, you may want to weigh your options.
