2026 Is Officially The Year Of The Space Western

[

Thanks to several high-profile releases, 2026 has officially become the year of the space Western. The space Western genre spawned from science fiction, involving otherworldly stories with Western tropes. The Star Wars movies can be argued to have popularized the subgenre, which continues to this day.

In 2026, The Mandalorian and Grogu will bring Star Wars back to theaters for the first time in seven years. The Mandalorian and Grogu‘s story follows on from Disney+’s The Mandalorian, a show that heavily features Western tropes. Going beyond Star Wars, though, which has been somewhat of a constant source of space Westerns since the 1970s, other big Hollywood productions are following suit in 2026.

James Gunn’s DC Universe is one such franchise, with 2026 featuring two major projects that can be described as space Westerns. One of these is Lanterns, a TV show set to release on HBO Max, while the other is Supergirl, both of which will be released in the summer of 2026. Even going into the latter half of the year, other tentpole movies and shows will be space Westerns, truly solidifying 2026 as the year of the subgenre.

Star Wars And DC Have Major Space Western Releases In 2026

The Mandalorian and Grogu Exclusive Still for ScreenRant

Firstly, in May 2026, we have the aforementioned The Mandalorian and Grogu. Star Wars has always been a franchise that embodies the Western genre; Japanese cinema was a direct influence for George Lucas when creating Star Wars, with samurai stories often influencing Westerns and vice versa. As such, Star Wars became the space Western/samurai subgenre. More so than many other projects in the franchise, The Mandalorian, and, thus, The Mandalorian and Grogu embody this.

From the “lone wolf and cub” dynamic of the two titular characters that is featured in a lot of Westerns, to Din Djarin himself being a lone gunslinger in a world, or galaxy, of outlaws, The Mandalorian and Grogu has all the stereotypical trademarks of a Western, only set in a space-faring franchise.

The overarching plot of the film involves the two titular characters aiding the New Republic in bringing order to a lawless frontier, the Outer Rim, that is engulfed in chaos caused by Imperial warlords and criminals like the Hutts. If anything embodies the space Western, it is The Mandalorian and Grogu.

The same can be said for the story of Lanterns. Lanterns follows two members of the Green Lantern Corps, an intergalactic police force. Since Lanterns‘ confirmation, James Gunn has described it as a True Detective-style story that, eventually, blends with the wider sci-fi elements of the Green Lantern Corps and wider DCU. While True Detective isn’t an outright Western, it certainly features tropes, be it its focus on troubled lawmen and corruption in small, secluded towns or isolated locations like the bayou and deserts.

As was evident in Lanterns‘ first trailer, the DCU show shares many similarities. One of the top comments on the YouTube posting for the trailer is “No Country for Old Lanterns,” riffing on the popular neo-Western, No Country for Old Men. Beyond that, the visual style emulates Westerns, including the small town in a secluded location, jaded lawmen trying to maintain order, and men riding horses with cowboy hats. Add in the aspects of the space-faring police at Lanterns‘ core, and you have a true space Western in every sense of the word/.

Finally, there is Supergirl. While not an outright space Western like Lanterns, Supergirl certainly seems to include some tropes of the genre. That story also focuses on an unlikely duo via Kara and Ruthye, like The Mandalorian and Grogu, with its villain being Krem, the leader of a band of space outlaws. Clearly, 2026 has space Western tropes sprinkled throughout most of its big releases in Star Wars and DC, and it doesn’t stop there.

Firefly’s Reboot Has Come At The Perfect Time

Another recently confirmed project set for 2026 is a reboot, or animated sequel, to Firefly. In many ways, Firefly is considered the quintessential space Western of the modern TV era, with a sequel planned to be set between it and its original movie follow-up, Serenity. Firefly features a lot of the aforementioned tropes of Westerns, chief among them the found family dynamic between its main characters.

The locations of Firefly, despite being set in space, resemble the American Old West, complete with a lack of oversight and government authority. Now, this will continue in 2026 with Firefly‘s sequel. With 2026 clearly making way for big franchises to delve into the space Western subgenre, a Firefly sequel could not have been more perfectly timed.

Other 2026 Big Hitters Draw On Classic Space Western Tropes

If that was not enough to prove that 2026 is the year for space Westerns, other huge projects that have been released or will be released in the year will contain tropes of the subgenre. Perhaps the biggest of these is Dune: Part Three. The Dune franchise has long embodied Western aspects, with the titular planet of Arrakis being a giant desert environment that is suitably violent as the natives of the world, the Fremen, look to oppose the colonization of the planet by the Imperium.

Dune is also a critique of the “white savior” trope, something that is often found in older, more problematic Western films. Combined with the conflict over spice, which mirrors the trope of oil mining in Western movies, it is clear that Dune: Part Three will be yet another film that embodies elements of a Western, only wrapped in a science-fiction tale.

In March 2026, Project Hail Mary was released, becoming the third-highest-grossing movie of the year so far. Like the aforementioned projects, Project Hail Mary contains aspects typical of a Western. The odd pairing at the center of the story and the focus on a dangerous mission into an unknown frontier are perhaps the biggest factors that make Project Hail Mary a space Western at its core.

All of this, as well as other space-faring projects like Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, just goes to show how much 2026 is leaning into this specific subgenre of science-fiction movies. The first few months of the year have already seen some resonate with audiences worldwide, and future big-hitter projects from massive franchises like Star Wars, the DCU, and Dune will only continue to do so.
