Due to the ever-growing price of hardware and technology in general, companies such as Nintendo, Microsoft, and in this case, Sony Interactive Entertainment have been feeling the pressure. As such, price increases have become a regular occurrence in recent years, and it seems as though another one is set to hit PlayStation users as early as next month.
For once, it will not be Sony’s PlayStation Plus service that will be the subject of a price increase; it will be its hardware instead. That is because, according to Sony Interactive Entertainment itself, a price adjustment for the PlayStation 5 console is on the way. Arriving for the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro, and even PlayStation Portal remote player, the price increase will go into effect across Southeast Asia and global markets as early as 1 May 2026. This means that in both the United States and United Kingdoms, the following changes will be implemented:
- PS5 – $649.99
- PS5 Digital Edition – $599.99
- PS5 Pro – $899.99
- PS5 – £569.99
- PS5 Digital Edition – £519.99
- PS5 Pro – £789.99
With continued pressures in the global economic landscape, we’ve made the decision to increase the prices of PS5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal remote player globally. We know that price changes impact our community, and after careful evaluation, we found this was a necessary step to ensure we can continue delivering innovative, high-quality gaming experiences to players worldwide.
As mentioned, Sony attributes the price increase to ongoing “pressures in the economic landscape”, and as such, it was necessary in order to ensure that its products will continue to offer “innovative, high-quality gaming experiences.” Of course, price increases such as these are not viable for many users, or potential customers in the future, but it seems as though Sony has no choice if it wishes to maintain long-term sustainability.
With it only being April, we can safely assume that more price increases will come into effect over the course of the year, as tariffs and the price of hardware show no signs of slowing down. As such, we can only imagine what this will mean for the cost of the PlayStation 6 when it inevitably launches in the future. For now, however, it seems as though Sony is making ends meet with recent increases to the cost of a PlayStation Plus subscription, which has led to large numbers of users canceling their subscriptions in recent years.
