The X-Men‘s biggest enemies just received a horror-inspired redesign that turns them into the stuff of nightmares for mutants. The X-Men regularly face a gauntlet of enemies who challenge their dream of peaceful coexistence from both ideological and physical fronts. Magneto is the most iconic of these foes, but beyond the Master of Magnetism, mutant heroes also have extremely powerful enemies such as Apocalypse and Mister Sinister, both of whom have a twisted obsession with the future of mutantkind.
Most notably, mutants endure a relentless wave of human prejudice that manifests in systemic and violent oppression. This deep-seated fear stems from the fact that mutants are seen as the inevitable replacement for Homo Sapiens. Organizations like the Friends of Humanity and the Church of Humanity spread propaganda, while government bodies enact restrictive legislation to strip mutants of their privacy and civil rights. This escalating hostility against mutants culminates in the deployment of the Sentinels, whose sole purpose is hunting down mutant individuals.
The Sentinels are often depicted as the ultimate challenge mutants are bound to fight, as the robots never stop their crusade, even when their original creators are long out of the picture.
The Sentinels Become Body Horror Monsters
The Uncanny X-Men #27; Written by Gail Simone; Art by Luciano Vecchio & Matthew Wilson
The X-Men’s newest team of heroes have one of the wildest first experiences in the Danger Room in The Uncanny X-Men #27. Forced to fight recreations of creatures like Devil Dinosaur, they surpass expectations and get to meet legendary X-Men like Beast and Nightcrawler. However, before they’re officially welcomed, a group of Sentinel-human hybrids arrive, forcing them to put their abilities to good use immediately after their first training session.
These new Sentinels possess extremely long limbs, pitch-black eyes, and enlongated faces and mouths. They also seem to be much faster and more agile than their traditional counterparts, though they’re apparently less durable. Nightcrawler explains that this new wave of Sentinels is the result of “illegal experiments conducted on violent convicts,” which adds another layer of horror and tragedy to an already macabre invention.
Despite their enhanced mobility and their number, the X-Men manage to defeat the new Sentinels quite swiftly. Deathdream, Jitter, and Calico are shown neutralizing one Sentinel each with a single attack. Besides, they’re aided by the arrival of Professor S (Sauron) and his own team of X-Men, composed of Syrin, Thunderbird, and a power-swapped duo of Magik and Colossus, who seemingly defeat the remaining Sentinels off-page.
Marvel’s New Sentinels Borrow Inspiration From The Best Version Of The Robots
X-Men: Days Of Future Past Introduced The Definitive Version Of The Sentinels
Fox’s X-Men franchise didn’t put too much focus on the Sentinels, which made their live-action debut as a Danger Room training exercies in X-Men: The Last Stand‘s opening sequence. It was only until X-Men: Days of Future Past that the Sentinels played a significant role, but the wait was more than worth it. The highly-advanced, ultra-adaptive Future Sentinels continue to be some of the most terrifying antagonists in a superhero movie due to their slender, ever-evolving, alien-like appearance and their limitless ability to summon mutant powers.
Founding X-Men Hero Officially Debuts Permanent New Superpower
One of the X-Men’s most underrated members unlocks the best superpower a mutant hero can have, complete with a full costume and appearance redesign.
The Uncanny X-Men #27‘s Sentinel-human hybrids share similar physical features, and their origins sound even creepier than Fox’s version. While they’re promptly defeated by the X-Men in a short battle sequence, these new robots could eventually gain a bigger role in X-Men lore. The fusion of robots with humans has been explored during the Krakoan era with characters like Omega Sentinel and the tragic Moira X, but the concept of a zombie-like monster Sentinel who has lost most of its humanity has a lot of untapped potential.
