EXCLUSIVE: British videogame Atomfall is coming to TV, courtesy of Rebellion and Two Brothers Pictures, the producer of The Assassin and Fleabag.
The game hails from indie studio Rebellion, which has teamed up with the Two Brothers label for the TV adaptation. A series is now being worked up. The game is a critical and commercial success. It won Best British Game at this month’s BAFTA Game Awards, while over 3.7M players have explored the world of Atomfall since it launched last year.
A very UK take on the post‑apocalyptic genre, Atomfall leans heavily into classic British sci‑fi and also draws on folk horror. It is set within a walled and militarized Quarantine Zone in England’s Lake District established after a nuclear incident. The outside world is assumed to be continuing as normal. Life within the zone, meanwhile, has deteriorated into something far stranger. The game follows a protagonist who wakes up inside the Quarantine Zone with no memory of how they arrived.
Atomfall was developed from an original idea by Jason Kingsley, who co-founded Rebellion with his brother Chris Kingsley. The game was inspired by a real‑life disaster at the Windscale nuclear plant in 1957, which remains the worst-ever nuclear accident in the UK.
The series is being developed as a co-production between Two Brothers and Rebellion. Emmy and Golden Globe winning writer-producers, and Two Brothers founders, Harry and Jack Williams, will write the TV drama.
“Atomfall has such a distinctive British tone and setting, and it’s been a real joy developing it alongside the Rebellion team – especially as two brothers working alongside two brothers (Jason and Chris Kingsley),” they said. “There’s something very exciting about expanding this strange, unsettling story for television.”
Jason Kingsley, CEO and Creative Director at Rebellion, and Chris Kingsley, Co-founder and CTO at the company, will be executive producers on the show. “Harry and Jack demonstrated a clear love for Atomfall and talked about their own particular endings when they were playing the game,” they said. “It is always exciting to work with people who share the same passion for creating and telling great stories and we are sure that this partnership will help to deliver a television series that will delight fans of the game and beyond.”
Alex Mercer (Doctor Who) will exec produce for Two Brothers and Ben Smith (Rogue Trooper) For Rebellion.
Two Brothers is part of All3Media and its credits include Fleabag, Liar, Baptiste and The Assassin. Sniper Elite outfit Rebellion, meanwhile, works across games, publishing, and is ramping up in film and TV.
It owns the legendary 2000 AD comic book, home of Judge Dredd, Rogue Trooper, Sláine and Zenith among other classic characters and stories. It also has its own studio facility in Oxfordshire, England. The first footage of Duncan Jones’ movie adaptation of Rogue Trooper has just been released. Atomfall marks a major foray into the world of TV series, where videogame adaptations of TV, with videogame adaptations currently in vogue, including The Last of Us and Fallout.
