But there’s inevitably a point where you’ll see the AI meander more and struggle to get back to the main point. Specific requests early on start bringing back more general answers, and the thread drifts without any clear break in the interaction.
It is not a dramatic failure. It is closer to a loss of momentum. As AI tools encourage longer and more continuous chats, that subtle shift becomes easier to spot. You might start with a clear plan for your talk about recent books and reading suggestions, and end up with suggestions sent seemingly to the wrong address.

Without the anchor phrase, the conversation began sensibly enough, then gradually drifted into more elaborate suggestions that required money and time I had already ruled out.
I started over with the new phrase. Now, every few messages, ChatGPT paused and recalibrated. It wrote, “Objective: plan a relaxing, low-cost evening at home. Constraints: keep effort minimal and avoid complex preparation. I will continue with simple, low-energy ideas.” The next suggestions felt noticeably more grounded, as if the assistant had remembered what kind of night I actually wanted.
That pattern held as the conversation continued. A few exchanges later, it checked in again. “Objective remains a calm evening indoors. Constraints are still minimal effort and low-cost. I will keep suggestions short and easy to follow.” The ideas that followed stayed within those boundaries, even as I asked follow-up questions that might otherwise have nudged things off course.
The same approach worked in a looser, more open-ended chat about curating a watchlist of the history of sci-fi movies, but only those available on the usual streaming services. It is the kind of request that can quickly turn into a generic list.
Without the anchor phrase, that is exactly what happened. The suggestions were reasonable, but broad, and the tone shifted toward familiar titles without much explanation. When I repeated the same prompt with the periodic check-in, the difference was clear.
A few messages in, the assistant wrote, “Objective: recommend a list of sci-fi films representative of the history of the genre, with two for each decade. Constraints: stick to mainstream movies and focus on easy streaming access. I will continue with tailored suggestions.” The next response included better ideas that I could start watching immediately.
Consistent reminders
AI systems are built to handle enormous amounts of context, yet they still benefit from a gentle nudge. The periodic anchor works less like a memory aid and more like a steady rhythm that keeps everything aligned.
It also changes how you write your prompts in the first place. Knowing that the assistant will revisit the goal encourages you to define that goal more clearly. The conversation becomes a loop rather than a straight line, with each check-in reinforcing the path you are on.
That matters more than it might seem. In longer chats, especially ones that drift across different parts of your day, small deviations add up. A conversation about dinner can turn into a discussion about movies, then slide into planning tomorrow, all without a clear boundary between them. The anchor phrase quietly pulls those threads back toward their starting point.
Long conversations with AI are meant to feel natural, and they can get pretty close for at least a while. The problem is that natural conversations also wander. A periodic anchor phrase does not stop that movement entirely, but it gives it a shape. It keeps the assistant aware of its own direction, which in turn makes the experience feel more consistent.
