Of all the assassins in the Assassin’s Creed series, the most popular by far has to be Ezio Auditore da Firenza. First making his appearance in Assassin’s Creed 2, players watched Ezio’s journey from a reckless young man to one of the few assassins to make it to old age and die on his own terms.
Well, I suppose dying from a heart attack at 65 isn’t exactly the ideal way to go out, but there that’s fairly good going for Italy in 1524.
Ezio is such a popular character, that finding someone to play him in a live-action series leads to pretty heated debates. Over the years, gamers have suggested everyone from Bradley Cooper to Luke Pasqualino, while others insist the best way to go is to just do an animated movie and simply bring back Roger Craig Smith.
“Roger Craig Smith should definitely not play an Italian 17 year old,” wrote one fan on Reddit back when the live-action Assassin’s Creed series was in limbo.
“Ben Barnes, not a bad choice at all although he’s a little too old now to play young Ezio, perfect for Brotherhood Ezio though,” another added.
Meanwhile, over on Facebook, there’s a surprising amount of love for Tom Ellis to play the beloved assassin, which seems like… a choice. Clearly, there’s no one clear pick for such a popular character… so it’s just as well the official Assassin’s Creed live-action series from Netflix won’t feature Ezio as far as we know. Still, it’s fun to speculate and share our hopes and dreams.
The main cast for the series has been confirmed as Lola Petticrew (Say Nothing), Toby Wallace (Euphoria Season 3), Zachary Hart (Slow Horses), Laura Marcus (Death by Lightning), Tanzyn Crawford (A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms), Nabhaan Rizwan (KAOS), and Claes Bang (Bad Sisters).
Noomi Rapace (Prometheus), Ramzy Bedia (Haunted Minds), Sean Harris (Mission: Impossible — Fallout), Corrado Invernizzi (Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny), Sandra Guldberg-Kampp (Foundation), Youssef Kerkour (A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms), Mirren Mack (28 Years Later: The Bone Temple), and Louis McCartney (Stranger Things: The First Shadow) have also joined the cast in recurring roles.
Here’s a little synopsis for the official series:
Assassin’s Creed is a high-octane thriller centered on the secret war between two shadowy factions — one set on determining mankind’s future through control and manipulation, while the other fights to preserve free will. The series follows its characters across pivotal historical events as they battle to shape humanity’s destiny.
The new series is set to take us to Ancient Rome, and while Ezio has visited the city before in Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, that’s around 1500 AD, so unless the Netflix series plans to hop between timelines (which could be fun), we probably won’t see Ezio show up in any major capacity.
With that said, rumors suggest Ezio is to make his return in Assassin’s Creed Hexe, although there’s no word yet on when this next entry in the video game series is supposed to release.
