[
Pokémon Diamond and Pearl have given us some of the most iconic designs of all time. The Sinnoh Pokédex is loaded with fan-favorites, offering up more popular Pokémon than any other generation except perhaps Gen 1. That popularity has given us the Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl remakes and Legends: Arceus video games recently, and numerous Pokémon from Gen 4 continue to be key parts of the franchise and fandom.
Narrowing down the most iconic Pokémon from Gen 4 is tricky because of how many there are that could reasonably be called “iconic.” As with our rankings of Gen 1, Gen 2, and Gen 3, we looked at the Pokémon’s popularity in the video games, TCG, anime, and other media, as well as its place in merchandise and the larger fandom. We also allowed for a couple of ties, when it felt warranted.
10
Bidoof
Somehow, Bidoof returned. This unassuming, goofy-looking Pokémon isn’t really that great in combat, and it’s not rare, but it’s somehow managed to remain a core part of Pokémon all these years later. It just keeps on coming back. There was even an official Bidoof Day a few years ago, perhaps proving that Game Freak and The Pokémon Company are also aware of just how much of a joke Bidoof is.
Achieving immortality through being a throwaway goofball may not be ideal, but it’s worked for Bidoof. Given how much Pokémon has toyed around with Bidoof over the past decade, perhaps we’ll get a new regional variant in Winds and Waves to really cement Bidoof’s legacy as one of the biggest Gen 4 icons.
9
Leafeon & Glaceon
Eeveelutions have been some of the most popular Pokémon ever, but they’re often made greater by the sum of their parts rather than on their own. Leafeon and Glaceon are two of the stronger designs of any Eevee evolutions, and getting them in the Gen 4 games can be tricky if you don’t know the secret.
So, while Leafeon and Glaceon are certainly iconic Pokémon, they can sometimes get lost in the shuffle when looking at Eeveelutions as a whole. Sinnoh’s Pokédex is also packed with Pokémon who have become mainstays in the series, so these two lose a bit when compared to other ‘Mon from Gen 4, which is why they don’t rank higher on this list.
8
Darkrai
Darkrai is edgy. Darkrai is cool. Darkrai is also (until recently) a fairly tough Mythical Pokémon to get ahold of. All of this has contributed to Darkrai’s being one of the most iconic Pokémon to come out of the Gen 4 games. It has had memorable moments in multiple video games and the anime, as well as the movies.
And thanks to the new Mega Darkrai in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, it’s also got a new form. Mega Darkrai is a key part of the upcoming Pitch Black set in the Pokémon TCG as well, so there are no signs its popularity is going to slow down anytime soon.
7
Rotom
There was nothing particularly memorable about Rotom when it debuted in Gen 4, other than the fact it had a few different forms that were fun to toy around with. Since then, however, Rotom has become a key part of Pokémon games and the anime. The Rotom Dex in Pokémon Sun and Moon made Rotom as important as ever, and the mainline games since then have given us Rotom Phones.
Each new Pokémon game has given us some kind of new functionality for Rotom, even if it’s just a tweak of how Rotom Phones work and what they can do. In the world of Pokémon, that makes Rotom just as important as the smartphone you’re probably reading this on.
6
Arceus
In the lore of Pokémon, Arceus is basically God, which obviously makes it a candidate for most iconic Pokémon. Getting Arceus originally was no easy feat, and it still has one of the coolest designs and backstories we’ve ever gotten. Arceus had a pivotal role in the movie Pokémon: Arceus and the Jewel of Life in 2009, and it’s one of the few Pokémon to ever get its name into the title of a video game thanks to Pokémon Legends: Arceus in 2022.
Arceus has also had starring roles in Pokémon TCG sets, including some highly sought-after cards, and it’s been featured on countless merchandise over the years. From plushes to statues to home decor, there’s no shortage of Arceus items out there. In terms of Legendary and Mythical Pokémon from Gen 4, Arceus gets the gold medal.
5
Turtwig, Chimchar, & Piplup
The Gen 4 Starters are some of the most iconic ever. Perhaps second only to Gen 1’s, the trio of Piplup, Chimchar, and Turtwig are adorable. They also evolve into some outstandingly powerful Pokémon that also happen to have cool designs, so there’s really no downsides to any of them.
We’ve gotten to see these three outside the different versions of Gen 4 games out there, as they’ve appeared in various spin-offs too. Their likenesses has appeared on multiple plushes, cards, and other official items since Diamond and Pearl debuted. Combined with the staying power of their final evolutions, this Sinnoh trio is easily one of the most memorable things about Gen 4.
4
Luxray
Other than Pikachu, who just so happens to be Pokémon‘s mascot, Luxray might be the most popular Electric-type out there. Its whole evolutionary line, which includes Shinx and Luxio, all have strong designs. It’s about more than looks, however. Luxray is also powerful. In the Gen 4 games, Luxray is one of those Pokémon you try to get quickly and then keep in your party.
Since appearing in Diamond and Pearl, Luxray has been featured in numerous mainline games and spin-offs like New Pokémon Snap. For many people, Luxray is even their favorite Pokémon from this generation, so it shouldn’t be too surprising to see it rank close to the top here.
3
Munchlax
A baby version of Snorlax is exactly as cute as you’d think it would be. Munchlax debuted in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, and it’s probably the most popular of the Baby Pokémon from any generation (sorry, Pichu). Munchlax’s popularity has gone beyond the games and anime — it’s also been heavily featured on official merchandise, including Pokémon Center’s holiday collections.
In any other generation, Munchlax might just take the #1 spot, proving just how competitive Gen 4 is in terms of popular Pokémon. However, a couple others from Sinnoh still beat it out for first place, even if there’s no denying Munchlax is one of the most iconic Pokémon of all time.
2
Garchomp
Cynthia’s Garchomp is practically legendary, but Garchomp on its own has had more staying power than just about any other Pokémon from the Sinnoh region. With its hammerhead shark design, Garchomp already looks cool, but then you have to factor in that it flies, and that just pushes it over the edge.
Garchomp remains one of the most powerful Pokémon out there, so it’s not exactly shocking that we keep seeing it appear in games. It’s gotten various gimmicks through the years, and Mega Garchomp Z in Legends: Z-A just adds to that legacy. Garchomp has gotten figures, cards, statues, and all sorts of official merchandise since Gen 4, and its popularity shows no signs of diminishing.
1
Lucario
Are you surprised Lucario gets the #1 spot? You shouldn’t be. Lucario isn’t just the most iconic Pokémon to come out of Gen 4 — it’s also one of the most iconic Pokémon of all time. Lucario had a prominent role in the anime, got its own movie thanks to Pokémon: Lucario and the Mystery of Mew, and it’s featured on some of the coolest and most valuable Pokémon cards out there.
Lucario has had multiple gimmicks and designs, including the most recent Mega Lucario Z, and it’s also been plastered on tons of official merchandise. There’s even a life-sized Lucario plush you could buy for $400. Listing off the various appearances of Lucario since Pokémon Diamond and Pearl would be too much to put here, but suffice it to say — Lucario is easily the most iconic Pokémon to come out of Gen 4.
